According to the novel, Dev actually fits the character of Shanker. We needed an athletic body for the role of the protagonist because the book mentioned that Shankar was into boxing and he knew horse riding and swimming as well. he learnt the Bengali dialect and it took him just seven days to mouth the dialogues given to him.
