Selflessly Employed!

Having a set of thoughts playing games in the mind, I went to meet my old college friends at the decided venue this afternoon. It was a plan that was finalized only a few days before, however, our meetings were the most infrequent. Post college years, life had been terribly busy for each one of us.

After the initial hasee-mazaak and joking around, the conversation took a serious mode as we came up with the topic of 'What does each one of us want from life'. Rohit was quick to reply - 'I haven't given enough thought to that. I plan to continue with my job. The income is regular. I cannot ask for anything more'. I intended to ask him where he would want to see himself 10 or 15 years after, but decided against it. He had his priorities set. Whether he does enjoy his work was a different matter altogether for our most practical friend.

Farhan, on the other hand, is still pursuing his CA. He has what you call an analytical bent of mind. He is content with numbers, statistics, the Profit and Loss Statements and all shapes and sizes of Balance Sheets. However, there is something that he doesn't want to do - Work for another Company. 'Its either gonna be my CA firm or a coaching institute for aspiring CAs'. I cannot imagine the rest of my life following orders and serving less educated idiots'!

The mind playing games again: I always manage to avert the attention towards something other than the topic of career, whenever someone asks me the same question. 'I am not sure' is my most obvious reply, followed by a change of discussion. This time, however, Farhan's words made me contemplate hard.

Is it just my wild imagination, or in our country, is life really tough for individuals who want to be self employed? Unless of course, they are expected to take care of the family business after their parents. Is Business considered a bad word for the Service Class? For most in our great nation, I assume, Government Service is the safest form of employment available. No risk - No loss!

A flash of memories crossed my mind... my father getting me into the best school possible...enrolling me into Brilliant Tutorials... sleepless nights during the Board Exams....mental breakdown while studying Mathematics.....topping the University!! .... Smiles all around.... Teary-eyed mother..

......Politics at workplace....affected scorecard......No appraisals...... affected bonus...... Unapproved leaves.....Endless arguments with the Manager....Resignation....

When the silence got too uncomfortable, it was Rohit who changed the subject this time - 'There's this latest movie playing that is........'
