Do Men Cry?

By: angel_babe55 | Posted Aug 29, 2011 | General | 3007 Views | (Updated Aug 29, 2011 08:07 PM)

Yesterday morning I was watching a war movie on TV and was touched to see the Commanding General crying after a successful attacked in the Vietnamese camp who maltreated their prisoners of war. He cried because, he lost some of his precious men just to free the captured soldiers in the enemy's camp. One prisoner (soldier) also cried because he was touched by the bravery of his comrades fighting for the enemy just for them to live. He cried because he can’t believe that he will be freed from being a prisoner of war. He cried because those soldiers, who saved them, lost their lives.

Then, in another TV program, I saw a father (an actor) crying during the interview, because his 16 years old daughter gets pregnant. What made him emotional is not because his daughter got pregnant but the man responsible for it- beats his daughter and even told her to take an abortion pills. It is this unconditional love of a father for her daughter that made this father cry instead of getting mad at her by getting pregnant at the young age.

My personal experienced was, seeing my dad mourning when my mom died. I didn’t hear him crying loud but I can feel deep inside he was weeping. His face shows, and his misty eyes says it all. Another experience of a man crying was, when one of my uncle undergo a kidney operation in which he can hardly pee, he cried in pain. But the unforgettable cry of a man that I ever saw was, when my eldest son was admitted in the hospital. His potassium level was down to 1.0mg, that a vial of potassium was needed to be injected in his IV to maintain his potassium level. And when the potassium mixed in the IV, he can’t help not to cry in severe pain. He feels he is dying a slow death that made me cry also. These are just some of reasons that caused some men to cry, I’m sure there are still more or different reasons why men cries.

What made the women cry, that men don't necessarily do?

Most women are emotional and easily weep over melo-drama TV series, romantic stories, separation or grief over the loss of a love one, loneliness, frustrations, or just out of any general sadness. While most men if not all, control their emotions no matter how sad the story is, no matter someone in the family left or died. Even the most precious things they treasures will be broken or lost or even the most love dog is gone. They try to suppress their feelings.

Men are known to be the less emotional sex: they are known to be strong and not easily perturbed or upset when there's family crisis. They stays cool, but deep inside bottled up their feelings by keeping it to themselves and not showing their emotions. While other, drown themselves in a drinking spree or getting drunk just to show up that they can manage to stand the situation, but in truth they are trying to escape from the reality of depression or what caused their grief.

According to studies, what made a man cry easily is caused by a lower testosterone. So when you see a man cries easily and frequently, it could be that his testosterone level decreases as he age, especially when he reach the age of 50 or more. This is why women also cry more than men, because their testosterone is lower than men aside of course if they are overly sensitive.

Does it make a lesser man when he cries?

In our society we tell our kids(boy especially) that, " Don’t cry, because you're a man or Big boys don't cry." In my opinion, some people say this, to boost the ego of the boy that being a boy or a man, he must be strong and superior in all ways. The macho image should be maintained even in the middle of crisis. We expect men to cry less than women, but its surely not wrong for men to be emotional sometimes or letting their teardrops fall. But, not crying or not showing any emotions at all, is not a guaranty that a person is a real man too. It’s not being un-manly or weak when you show your emotions, it’s rather weak, when you're afraid to show your emotions, that in itself is emotional weakness. While we know that both men and women rejoice, gets mad/angry sigh and cry, yell or shout but both express emotions differently. So, I will end this topic and believe that men do cry, because they are also human, they have feelings, emotions, they have strength, weaknesses, short comings and most of all because they are not robots!

Nicely written. Its ok if men cry. They shouldnt keep their emotions within. Letting your emotions flow out helps you to stay calm and focus on more important things in life. I have had experiences when I have seen guys cry when the situation was really hard for them to handle. We cant judge if a man is ''manly'' by seeing if he cries or not. A good article. you really made me think :)...Read More

Yes its true, we cant judge a man if he is not man enough if he cries. Its all about being true to yourself that u let your emotions out becoz thats what u really feel.

Thanx for adding value in my dp. Btw., seems to be ur first time to visit my page. I wish to see u more next time.

@kdrocks- Twin its okay to be emotional as I have mentioned above. What is not okay is when u keep pretending that ur okay when in truth you're not. Crying is also another way of stress buster. It helps our eyes clean and shiny. So I dont see any reason why men need not cry when necessary.

Thanx for the visit and comments.

Angel sis, emotions affect every person, so whether it is man, woman or child is immaterial. In emotional moments, people do cry. But some people feel that it is not manly to cry and try and supress their tears. Supressed emotions are not good, so crying isn't a bad idea as it helps to unleash emotions.

But there are small percentage of people who don't cry because they are heartless!! Such people are really dangerous.

Very well-written and thought-provoking post sis, thanks for sharing this.

People cry when they lose a loved one or suffer extreme injustice or such other reasons. And everybody has to suffer this. Hence, all cry! Some might not show!

Great post!

Dear Angel thought provoking post. Very interesting read. Recently I was reading an article ''men lies and women cries'' but here you have mentioned the reasons why men cry.

Generally When men cry they don’t like it to be known because it could be taken as a sign of weakness.

For a woman if a man cries,hes a wimp
if he doesnt,hes insensitive.

I really never cried in d public except at my fathers funeral, @jmathur sir is an exception, and yes no matter what, women do makes a man cry like a boy , i wud like 2 eco sir @Sage1947 point of view. In teenage years and early twentier women run after bad boys, by that time no mr. Nice guy. And when they had a rather exciting relation with those ''no tears in my eyes'' type, in their late twenties and early thirties they want ''nice guys with tears 2 shine their eyes'' but its a rare man who is intune with his feelings and wants wil seldom be happy with the ''leftovers'' women have 2 give.

Anyways my advice 2 men is that, if u have 2 hav a cry, cry , but definitely not infront of the opposite sex

i had my share of experiences so trust me.

Very well written and thought provoking DP:) I have often comtemplated about this question as well. I agree that in society, men are raised to believe that crying is a weakness. And that they should remain strong and not show any emotions. If they do cry, others may tease them. I agree with Suketu’s comment that men shouldn’t keep their emotions bottled up inside. They should let it out or else they will eventually explode! I have heard some men do cry in private though or under certain circumstances. I guess it depends on the given situation.

I personally have never seen my father cry. I only witnessed one other man cry in my life and I honestly didn’t know how to react.

@suketu- you're right buddy. Suppressing ur emotions is like a poison that slowly develop right inside ur body. One needs to release the feeling of grief or depression to feel better to avoid heart ailments. Cry your heart out, lol! But kidding aside crying will make u feel refresh again.

Thanx for the visit and adding value to my dp.

God bless.

@rashmi.sinha- Thats okay for hubby to cry over sad movie. What is not normal is, he will laugh-out-loud when the story is sad, lol. But seriously, it will not make him less a man to show his feelings. He is just like other normal men who are affected by sad moment or what made them grieve for the moment.

Thanx for sharing ur experience. I appreciate ur frankness and honesty.

God bless and give my regards to my bro Rajesh.
