Well, well. Bollywood celebrities not only entertain on-screen but off-screen too. Countless celebrities down the ages have been either arrested or sent to jail for various offences or crimes. Salman Khan only adds to the list. The following are only a few cases that took place. For want of space, other cases have not been mentioned. MADHUBALA(1933-69, d. aged 36): Madhubala reached court for rejecting to act in the movie Naya Daur(1957) after taking the advance from the director BR Chopra.
AMITABH BACHCHAN(72): He faces a human rights lawsuit in the U.S. in 2015 for his alleged role in the 1984 violence against Sikhs in India.
SANJAY DUTT(55): Sanjay was arrested following the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. He was jailed for 16 months between 1994-96 under the TADA(Prevention Act) for illegal possession of firearms. He is presently serving his remaining jail term(of 5 years) in Pune's Yerwada Jail.
SUNIEL SHETTY(53): Suniel Shetty too was hauled up in a Rs 10 lakh cheque dishonour case when he was a director of Hyundai India Telecom Limited in 2006.
GOVINDA(51): Govinda's temper problems landed him in trouble in 2007 when the actor slapped Santosh Rai, an onlooker who allegedly trespassed and harassed girls in the perimeter of the Govinda's sets of Money Hai Toh Honey Hai. The victim filed an assault and criminal intimidation case against the actor in Bombay High Court and even tried to drag the actor to Supreme Court without much success.
NAVJOT SINGH SIDHU(51): He was accused of fatally assaulting Gurnam Singh in an incident of road rage in 1988, 26 years ago. Sidhu was arrested and had to spend several days lodged in a Patiala jail. The former cricketer was sentenced to 3 year jail term for culpable homicide in December 2006 which led to Sidhu resigning from his position of MP.
AAMIR KHAN(50): Jabalpur MP local court directed police to register a case against Aamir Khan, filmmakers Raju Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and others for publication of a controversial poster of their movie PK on August 21 2014. The directives were given by Judicial Magistrate First Class(JMFC) R D Deharia to Aadhartal Police Station In-charge on a complaint filed by advocate Amit Sahu for obscenity and indecency.
SHAHRUKH KHAN(49): A social activist Varsha Deshpande, along with several other female foeticide activists, filed a sex determination case against Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan, post the birth the of their youngest son AbRam in 2013. But the couple maintained they had no prior knowledge about the sex of the child.
SALMAN KHAN(49): The beloved Bhai of Bollywood is sentenced to five years in jail by the Mumbai sessions court after being convicted for culpable homicide in the 2002 hit-and-run case.
PURU RAJKUMAR(49): Puru is the first Bollywood actor who ended up crushing sleeping people on December 7 1993 in Bandra West at 3.30 am. Three people were killed and three were maimed. Neither was Puru jailed after that incident nor is he facing charges of homicide. He was let off after paying Rs 35000.
AKSHAY KUMAR(47): He was arrested when a social worker filed an obscenity complaint against him for his act of getting his pants unbuttoned by his wife Twinkle, at Lakme Fashion Week in May 2009.
MADHUR BHANDARKAR(46): Bringing the issue of casting couch back in the limelight, Bhandarkar was dragged in a rape case after a struggling actress Preeti Jain pressed charges of molestation against Bhandarkar in 2006. However, Madhur was granted bail and walked free due to unavailable evidence.
SAIF ALI KHAN(44): He was in the news for beating up a man in the Taj Hotel, Mumbai. Saif and his gang were requested by a nearby person to keep silent. Resulting Saif Got angry and beaten him badly. But, latterly the actor was arrested on a charge of Attempt to Murder and unfortunately spent few hours in jail.
RAJPAL YADAV(44): He hid the details of Rs 5 crore filed against him and his wife by a businessman. He was jailed for 10 days in December 2013.
VINDU DARA SINGH(43): Vindu was arrested in connection with IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal on May 22 2013. He was granted bail on June 14.
JOHN ABRAHAM(42): In April 2006, John Abraham crashed his Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike into a bicycle and injured two people. Since no fatal injuries were caused to the victims, John was granted bail by the Bombay High Court after a Bandra court had sentenced him to 15 days of imprisonment for rash driving.
FARDEEN KHAN(41): His drug addiction almost cost him a visit to jail after he was busted while attempting to buy cocaine on May 4 2001. Since the actor plead guilty and denied any intentions of further sale of the drugs, he was let off after a de-addiction treatment.
INDER KUMAR(41): On April 25 2014, actor Inder was arrested for allegedly raping his girlfriend in his Andheri apartment. On May 9, police termed it rape and assault. On June 10, Inder was granted bail.
GEETA KAPOOR(41): Choreographer Geeta allegedly knocked down a pedestrian in suburban Mumbai and was booked for dangerous driving on March 12 2015.
MONICA BEDI(40): In September 2002, she was arrested with Abu Salem by the Lisbon police for entering Portugal on forged documents. They served jail sentence in Portugal. On 29 September 2006, an Indian Court convicted Bedi for passport forgery for procuring a passport on a fictitious name. In November 2010, the Supreme Court of India upheld her conviction.
SONALI BENDRE(40): Sonali was arrested in March 2001, posing ‘inappropriately’ for a magazine cover, thus hurting the religious sentiments of some people. She too got quick bail. Bendre's picture on the cover page of Showtime magazine(March 16-31 1998 issue) showed her attired in a short kurta with bare legs. The ochre-coloured top worn by her also bore religious motifs.
SHINEY AHUJA(39): In June 2009, his maid pressed rape charges against him. Shiney maintained that he had consensual sex with her though later confessed to the crime. However, the domestic help went back on her charges later but was prosecuted for perjury. On March 30, 2011, a sessions court judge sentenced Ahuja to seven years of imprisonment along with a fine of? 3000.
RAJA CHAUDHARY(39): He has been in and out of jail for a slew of alleged offences. In November 2010, he was arrested for beating his girlfriend Shraddha Sharma at his residence. In January 2011, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting ex-wife and reality show Big Boss winner Shweta Tiwari at her residence. On April 11, he was arrested for allegedly obtaining a SIM card using forged documents.
SHAYAN MUNSHI(34): In 2006, model-turned actor Shayan Munshi was arrested at the Kolkata airport, when he was on his way to Bangkok. Munshi was a key witness in the Jessica Lall murder case, and he had been barred from leaving the country without taking prior permission from the police. He was arrested based on this notice, and granted bail the same day. Munshi later turned hostile, and now he faces a case of perjury. If found guilty, he may get seven years of jail term.
PRIYANKA CHOPRA(32): In 2014, there was the sex racket case at a property owned by Priyanka. The actress also had a brush with the law when IT officials raided her apartment on January 23, 2011. Her then-rumored boyfriend Shahid Kapoor was found in her apartment before the raids as well.
ANKIT TIWARI(29): Playback singer Ankit Tiwari went to jail in 2014. The Aashiqui 2 singer was arrested on May 8 for allegedly raping a female friend.
SOORAJ PANCHOLI(24): Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj found himself behind the bars on June 10, 2013 for allegedly abetting actress and his ex-girlfriend, Jiah Khan's suicide but was later released on bail. The case is ongoing.
SHWETA BASU(24): Award-winning child actress Shweta Basu Prasad was arrested on August 31 2014 in an alleged prostitution scam in Hyderabad AP, but on December 5 2014 was given a clean chit by the court.
