Rahul was my friend, we studied together at Delhi University, after finishing college I started working and Rahul was gone to studying law. I didn’t meet him for ten long years and few months back we met in Delhi metro. He has changed a little, his face has become full and he has gained some weight. He said that he is working as a professional lawyer and teaching for the deprived children in his vacant time. He impressed me and we exchanged our number.

Few days back he called me and said “Prashant can you do me a favour. I puzzled what he wants from me. Then I said what I could do for her, he said that one of his friend’s sisters is critically ill and she requires blood so he wants that I should donate blood along with him. It was not a big thing so I agreed instantly. So he said on Sunday he would meet me in hospital and we can give blood.

Sunday on around eleven I reached Hospital, Rahul was waiting for me, along with him was a middle aged man, bearded and looking troubled. Rahul introduced him as the father of his friend. As there was a long rush in the blood donating unit, I filled the form of blood donation. After filling the form the doctors made some compulsory tests like blood pressure, weight etc. Finally they injected a small syringe in my arm and blood was slowly rushed into a bottle.

The whole exercise took around one hour. When I came out Rahul went inside to donate blood, so just to spend time I started talking to his friend’s father. In hospitals people always look a person who can hear them. He said that his daughter was studying management. Everything was fine and he was earning enough to run his family and provide education to his children, then suddenly daughter got ill, and it was very serious disease life threatening disease where she requires blood in regular interval and then he is here. I asked him that where is his son who is Rahul’s friend ?. He said that he does not have any son, and he don’t even know Rahul and Rahul just came here because he has just heard about them from someone else. As we were talking suddenly he stood up and said he has to go to ward as this doctor”s time for visit to his daughter.

When Rahul came out after donating the blood there was an expression of gratitude on his face and there was an expression of gratitude on my face also. That is how the human chain does work, that I how the humanity goes to work.

He left to court and I left to office and during my way to office I was thinking the blood slowly slowly dripping into a small bottle through a needle. I felt a sensation at least my blood will flow in someone else body whose caste, class and religion is irrelevant for me.
