A Little Extra..

By: desigal | Posted Apr 05, 2011 | Everyday life | 554 Views | (Updated Apr 05, 2011 09:18 PM)

If you are an Indian and belong to the middle class (like me :P), you would instantly know what I am talking about! We all seem to have one thing in common that is we always want a little extra!

The best example I can give to support my theory is seen in a hotel or anywhere food is served! We always want that extra bowl of chutney, sauce, curry, what ever it is even if we waste it later we want it, that's it!

I love to see the aunties in my neighbourhood shopping for vegetables in the morning! More so for the different kinds of haggling skills on display everyday! "What only these many chillies for 5 Rs?" , "I have taken so many veggies, give me coriander free" lol !

They are completely blinded of the fact that an old lady carries so much of weight on her head and walks bare foot just make her ends meet, what will they get if they get 2-3 chillies extra? Don't even get me started on how much of vegetables are wasted in the fridge just by not using them for months!

May be this attitude stems from the fact that people need to run their houses with limited income, what do I know? I have limited experience of running a house. lol But my point is why do you show over smartness in such things? Or may be there is some hidden deep satisfaction that people get when they do that!

Not that I have any problem with any of this but just a thought! No one in this world would do anything without profit! But you need to invest also, you need to maintain a business also, no matter how small or big it is!

There is totally another side of this story too, that is when we are taken for a ride! We are cheated too! I guess it many ways it evens it out! Like when you fight for every rupee while buying vegetables and lose your hard earned money to a scam like "give us 10k we will double it in 3 months! "

But that's exactly my point, we should use our brains in such things and be careful and not fall into such scams rather than think of scoring over a autowallah or a dukanwallah!

You loved this blog. Thank you for your rating.

You are right, everyone wants extra. We want to spend minimum resources and get maximum output in every area of our life.

Interesting application of this concept is what everyone experiences at work - bosses want employees to do maximum work possible, preferably most of it overtime, without expecting extra :)

And good point about getting trapped in the search for extra - doubling of money, everyday people hand over their hard earned money to crooks and then cry before TV cameras.

Very relevant post, deserving of FD :)

Absolutely correct Meghana. I endorse your views in full. 'Penny wise, pound foolish' is the saying which applies perfectly to we, the middle class Indians (more to the women). Instead of pressurizing a person earning some buck with a lot of hard work to make both ends meet for peanuts, let us save ourselves from the heavy losses we bear because of our greed and ignorance of the conmen roaming about almost every nook and corner of the cities of our country.

Hearty compliments for the eye-opener.

so true dear...........this is the basic mentality to bargain for 2 rupees, but spending thousands for nothing,i also wonder, why it happens. Once I had a friend who used to fight with dukanwallas for 25 paise, but he spent 60 thousand on some stupid hair fall treatment for which he had no remorse. the treatment was a complete failure, then also he ws indifferent. I have seen many times, elder people fighting with small kids selling ''saag'' on roadside, kids running after them for one rupee and they are ignoring those kids and forcibly taking saag from them!!!!!!!!!!! inhuman, isn't it? check their bags, may be they have bought some rare kind of fish some odd 240rs per kg! what's the moral? we have a tendency to bargain with people who are small time business people, rather than biggies. go to the super market, the same saag costs 10 rs,and they buy it without hesitation , feeling rather classy and proud!!!!!!!!!!!! typical middle class mentality! hai re India, yeh kya gazab tamasha! Thanks for sharing sis,my thoughts echoed with u once again!...Read More

I feel that you should have written a little extra paragraph! it was a delightful read :-)

Even though, we blow money on anything and everything, the sinful pleasure of not paying at toll gate etc. also exemplify the same pleasure

PS -
I remember, once attending an interview at HLL and they told me, we can give you only INR x per month, and if your performance is good with in 6 month your salary can be revised.

I was pretty young and it made a dent on my ego and hence I replied ''Sir, if you go to vegetable market and try to sell the same philosophy, that I will pay only Re.1/- per kg of onion and if it is found to be good, I will pay market price in a month, will they agree? Everything got a shelf value and hence you should take calculated risk''
No need to say that, I never end up in working at HLL :-)

Ye to hota hi hai hamesha! Why do u think people order soup 1 by 2? So that u get more quantity of soup! Not surprising that some restaurants charge more for 1 by 2 orders nowadays :P

Loved the way u urself came up with these observations! Keep it up!

And lol @hermit ka comment!

Well I might be stretching the point a little too far but other than being hard bargainers which is a good thing, I guess maybe there is a quite sense of satisfaction we get then ''Hey I won''.

I mean each time we all loose in the sense that we might not today seem to have it all, like travelling through the best roads etc. but that game between people I guess is something that excites us. Also probably yes there is this hangover for Pre-1991 years where for godo reason resources were scares and it only made sense for us to make and extract the maximum mileage out of anything we received.
