Every household, whether big or small has a set of dishes. It is a basic commodity. Obviously, dishes need to be washed and cleaned regularly or as per use. To make things easier, dishwashers have come to our aid.
Dishwashers come with a variety of features. Some are basic and some high-tech with many features. A first-time buyer can get overwhelmed with so many options to choose from.

Types of Dishwashers
- Built-in Dishwasher
The Built-in Dishwasher is the standard variety and by far the most common as well. They are spacious and have the usual two-track layout. It is the traditional design of the 24-inch wide model, so it fits properly under the kitchen sink or work surface. They are non-removable and installed with permanent plumbing and power connection. Earlier models used buttons and dials to set the washing cycle but now, due to upgradation, new models feature advanced temperature settings and a touchscreen.

- Compact Dishwasher
The Compact Dishwashers are smaller. They measure up to 18 inches wide. Its small size makes it suitable for smaller spaces.
Average size: Width: 18 inches; depth: 22.5 inches; height: 32.50 inches
- Drawer Dishwasher
The drawer Dishwashers are a new addition to the family of dishwashers. There are two types, viz; single drawer dishwasher and double drawer dishwasher. The single-drawer dishwashers are not suitable for large families. It cannot wash many dishes in one go. A double-drawer model, enables you to run the same number of dishes as a traditional washer, but on different settings, if required. They are installed in the same space as 24-inch standard ones and offer flexibility with regard to larger and smaller loads. They are easier to load as the drawer slides out at the work level enabling minimal bending.

- Portable and/or Countertop Dishwashers
Portable and Countertop Dishwashers may not necessarily be the same thing. Both can be plugged into your kitchen faucet and can be drained out into your sink. These are an excellent option if you have limited space. Portable dishwashers have wheels so they are movable.
Average size: Width: around 24 inches; depth: 28 inches; height: around 36 inches
Features That Need to Be Considered
- Size– Before purchasing, figure out where you are going to place the dishwasher. Measure the allotted space and look for a machine that fits within the allotted space.
- Machine Sound – Old models create noise while the machine is being used. Make sure to check the noise in decibels; if it is below 45dB, it will be virtually If the decimal level is around 60dB or more, it means the machine will make quite a loud noise.
- Dishwasher Capacity – It refers to how many place settings can fit in a single load. Here are the basic capacity ranges:
Compact
Capacity: Up to 8 five-piece place settings
Standard
Capacity: Up to 12 five-piece place settings
Tall tub
Capacity: Up to 14 five-piece place settings
- Water Temperature – There are dishwashers that clean the dishes with room temperature water. Some dishwashers pre-heat the water before using it to clean the dishes, this helps to remove oil and grease stains from the dishes easily.
- Tub Material – The tub inside the machine is either stainless steel or plastic. Many still have plastic tubs but now manufacturers have brought in stainless steel tubs. Stainless tubs are quieter. Furthermore, stainless steel is more resistant to high heat, which is excellent if you’re looking to sanitize your dishes. They are more expensive, but stainless tubs are more energy efficient as they can hold heat more effectively than their plastic counterparts, hence they save you money in the long run.
- Sensors – Many dishwashers come with sensors, that detect how dirty the dishes are and how much power will it required to clean them. It will then adjust the water level and pressure accordingly. There are different types of sensors such as soil level sensors, temperature sensors, water sensors, and detergent sensors. Soil level sensors automatically adjust the cleaning cycle. Temperature sensor ensures proper water temperature, water sensor helps in maintaining the amount of water required while cleaning, and detergent sensor releases proper amount of dishwashing liquid in the washing.
- Cycles – The Dishwasher cycle allows customized washing for all types of dishes, from fine china to pots and pans. Rinse and hold: This cycle helps to remove all the scrapings left on the dishes or pots and also eliminates the smell without using any detergent Sanitize: The Sanitize rinse option cleans 99.9 % of bacteria. Quick Wash: Quick Wash cycle is used for washing lightly soiled dishes. It finishes the cycle within minutes. Delayed Start: This allows you to pre-set the timer for the machine to start itself.
- Flexible dish and utensil racks – Smart and flexible utensil racks like with individual slots, are perfect for small utensils like spoons and forks. Adjustable racks can be used to accommodate pots and pans.
