I like Zaheer Khan. Zaheer Khan plays cricket. Cricket is the national game of India. India is my country. Lots of people play cricket. Zaheer khan also plays cricket. The difference is that Zaheer Khan plays cricket for the national team. He plays against teams of other countries. Zaheer Khan is a bowler. No, he is not a hat. My grandfather had a bowler hat. But Zaheer Khan is a human being.
He bowls for the Indian cricket team. He is a fast bowler. There are other fast bowlers in the Indian cricket team. For example, there are Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra. Agit Agarkar is a medium fast bowler. But Zaheer Khan is a fast bowler. He and Nehra are the fastest bowlers in India. Some people say that Zaheer Khan has great potential. My teacher told me that potential is a word that big people use for backhanded compliment, when they are patronising someone. But, Zaheer Khan really has great potential. He has been trying to realise that potential for nearly 2 years now.
Among Zaheer Khan’s strengths is a fearsome Yorker, which reminds one of another great fast bowler Wasim Akram. But Zaheer Khan is not yet as great as Waism Bhai. He has the potential, though. Zaheer Khan also has a great outswinger. An outswinger is a delivery. It is not performed in a maternity ward. A delivery is what a bowler [not a hat] bowls at a batsman [not Batman and Robin]. Zaheer Khan’s outswingers have got Brian Lara out quite a few times in the current series between India and West Indies. Brian Lara is God # 2. God # 1 is a chap from Mumbai.
Zaheer Khan is a genuine fast bowler. He has not yet won any match for India on his own. But his time will come. He has great potential. His greatest strengths are deliveries which angle away from the batsman. No, he does not draw acute and obtuse angles. Zaheer Khan has picked up many of his 40-odd wickets in Test Matches this way. By angling the ball away. Of course, his Yorkers have also got him lots of wickets.
Zaheer Khan is also a handy batsman. He has struck many sixes and fours in the one-day internationals. Some of sixes cleared the ground against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is a team that has lots of potential. But they have yet to realise it. Some unkind people say that Zimbabwe are a very poor team, and performing against them is no big deal. But Zaheer Khan is a player with great potential. Zaheer Khan performed very well against the blasted Aussies last year. Blasted Aussies is a loving term for the Australian cricket team. They are also a team with great potential for playing spinners. Zaheer Khan bowled very well in the one day internationals against the blasted Aussies.
His best moment came in the third test match. With India needing 14 runs to win, Zaheer Khan defied Glen McGrath and Jason Gillespie for 4 overs, enabling Sameer Dighe to play some fluky shots behind cover point that won us the series. It was Zaheer Khan’s grit and determination that saw him hang in there. He has great potential.
Zaheer Khan is the future of India’s pace attack. He is the inheritor of a great line of opening bowlers [not hats] for India. Amar Singh and Mohammed Nissar were the earliest known fast bowlers for India. They were followed by such distinguished names in opening bowling as Abid Ali, Sunil Gavaskar, Roger Binny, Madan Lal, Mohinder Amarnath Kapil Da Jawab nahin, Manoj Prabhakar and Srinath.
Geoffrey Boycotts grandmother could bowl faster than all of them, except for Kapil Paaji and Amar Singh and Md. Nissar and Srinath. The kindest words for the above gentlemen were “trundlers”. So Zaheer Khan’s advent came as a pleasant surprise to India’s zillion cricket fans. These fans were desperate for a genuine fast bowler [not hat] We all hope that Zaheer Khan continues to bowl fast and accurate. By doing so, he will be doing a greats service to a team which has great batting potential. The Indian team lacks a fast bowler who can put the fear of God [not the Mumbai one] into batsmen. We hope Zaheer Khan is that bowler [not hat].After all, he has the potential.
