It was one of those chilly rainy nights, the sort that slaps your brain back into action when its been dulled by a few hours of booze in a cozy pub. I was in top form with a small group of buddies in my favorite pub ’Escape’.
Suddenly I was greeted by some catchy distinctive acoustics of enchanting synthesizers and exquisite organ chords , slowly simple but impressive guitars show up, I close my eyes and sway my head at every single riff I listen and after about four minutes the drums pump up my adrenaline. And after about eight minutes the instrumental music escalates and finally explodes into vocals with soulful soloing.
“Come on, you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and SHINE.....………
I have goosebumps all over. The song is stunningly emotional and one of the most delightful songs I ever heard. Period.
This incredible first track (Shine on you crazy Diamond) was voted the number 2 Floyd song ever.
This track is a bittersweet eulogy, (depicting Syd.Barett) that swells with longing and dwells sadness and tragedy. The lyrics are a heartfelt tribute to ex-Floyd vocalist Syd.
‘Welcome to the machine’ the second track in the album, is weakest in the set, but not a bad song. Not at all.. Well, it is a complex song, in the sense keyboards, echoes of acoustic guitars, synthesizers effects are used to simulate elevator moving type of acoustics. In fact, it is supposed to be sound effects simulating dehumanizing-manufacturing units, which contributed to the inevitable absence of their band-mate, Syd. It has simple meaningful https://lyrics.
“Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream? Its all right we
Told you what to dream…”
The society generally instills in younger generation the importance of materialistic needs and its impact on happiness.Unfortunately most of them grow up with dreams dictated by the society, instead of living up to their own dreams.
“Have a Cigar” is the third track in the album. Many of the music lovers, may have heard this song for years not realizing it was the Floyd. But in a way, it is NOT a Floyd song, it was sung by a non-Floyd band member Roy Harper. The synthesizer from Richard Wright is a highlight in the song. This song is about commercial exploitations of artists by recording companies. This song will silence all those doubters that argue that Pink Floyd cannot rock. The famous sarcastic lyrics in this song are one of my favorite.
“Well I’ve always had a deep respect,
And I mean that most sincerely
The band is just fantastic
That is really what I think,
Oh by the way
Which ones Pink?”
The last line is an all time classic one. It refers to who the real Pink Floyd is? Well, it is no one. Pink Floyd is a name of a band not name of any one member.
This song grows on you, the more I listen the better I think it is. Well, you have to listen to it to believe me.
“Wish you were here” is perhaps the most poetic ballads ever recorded in the annals of rock music. Here it goes
“So, so you think you can tell heaven from hell, blue skies from pain, Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil”.
Well, can anyone tell the difference between heaven and hell? ? ? But we pretend we know everything.
More touching lyrics from the song include
“How I wish, how I wish you were here, We’ve just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year
…..”
If you have ever loved and lost a friend, this part of the song will rip your heart into pieces, you will feel tear drops in your eyes.
This song is obviously about Syd Barret, and their childhood friendship .An ode to the original crowning glory of this rock band.
The album ends with a breezy ending and a heartfelt tribute through the second part of Shine on you crazy Diamond
,
“Nobody knows where you are, how near, how far,
Shine on…
……”
The album closes off with this distinctive melody which leaves you desiring for more of this splendid album.
The creative and intelligent music in this album is unparalleled by anything I have heard from Pink Floyd. It is a masterpiece.
It is a 'must have album for all music lovers.
Shine on ‘have a Great Pink Floyd weekend.
