We were using Whirlpool 190L single door fridge for more than a decade and it was still working great with no issues. We never made even a single service call on that fridge. Having such a great experience we decided to go for the same brand once again and we visited their showroom located in Trichy.
Three door Proton in black and chrome finish was looking great and had a five star on the door as well and immediately we bought it without any usual homework. It was delivered on the same day. It was pretty decent in look, build quality.
After few days, cooling was taking almost hours and hours even without any much content inside, we watched for couple of days and contacted the dealer, who sent the service person. He checked and said everything is perfect and went back stating that after few weeks it will be normal. We never knew that day he is mentioning that the abnormality will become normal to us with passing time!
After few days, there was sudden jerking scary noise started coming from the fridge whenever the compressor starts followed by water pouring kind of continuous sound. We complained and received same answer and it too become normal to us in our busy schedules.
After a month, loud metallic sounds started as the sheet metal used is very thin and due to change in temperature around it, it started bending and denting itself. some places it bulged out and some places it caved in. We complained to the dealer and he said nothing can be done and he mentioned that at least we bought non-electronic model and those who bought those are suffering more with frequent failures. Again with no options we let it go with no time for it!
After few months, shockingly the EB bill was very huge than our regular consumption. Except fridge nothing was added new. We checked for the 5 Star in the door, shockingly we came to know it is a 5 star which has nothing to do with the power rating but only to indicate eco-friendliness of the fridge and consumes loads of electricity.
The shock does not stopped there, after nearly 3-4 months one night there was a very huge noise as if some small airplane is held inside with its propeller hitting everywhere. It was scary and when everyone came out of our rooms we found the noise to be coming from the fridge. We switched off and opened the fridge to see the ice freezer section filled with ice flakes all over and the fan behind the wall is actually hitting the frozen ice inside. We unplugged the unit and called the service.
Next day someone came and tested it, opened it in-out, cleaned all ice clogged everywhere in and around the freezer section and said that something is wrong with the timer control located on the bottom behind. He adjusted it and said it is fixed. It was working fine only to have the same issue again after few weeks. It was the standard service with service charges for every visit without any fix to it. Again each time the service person argues with us saying it is frost free model(not sure what frost free is) and no way it will occur again.
Tired of all these mess finally we started manually switching of this fridge every now and then to let the ice flakes built inside to melt and go. Wasted nearly 30 thousand on this fridge, which is the worst model we ever seen and removed our peace of mind! No brand is the brand with the quality it used to be sometime back and in fact no brand even care for any of its customer except looting their money. We are just waiting for the day to throw this model out of our house and out of our mind! Beware, never buy this model!
