11 Enchanting Gems. Review on Veer-Zara Songs

Finally, the wait is over….’Veez-Zaara’ music is out…. The album is special because its music is composed by late Madan Mohan.

Tunes, which were earlier composed by Madan Mohan have been recreated and used for the movie’s song situations.

The album opens with a wonderful song ‘Tere Liye...’. So far, it is my favorite in the entire album. Soothing voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Roopkumar Rathod, beautiful use of piano and guitar…the song takes you into another world.

‘Main Yahan Hun’ is a passionate song. Udit Narayan is perfect choice for this song; he does complete justice to this song in his endearing style- passionate, fresh and romantic.

‘Aisa Des Hain Mera’ (Udit Narayan, Gurdas Maan, Lataji) is typical north Indian-Punjabi folk song. This song has a very 60s feel. But it reminds me strongly of ‘yeh desh hain veer jawanon ka’ and ‘mere desh ki dharti.’Honestly, I would rather skip this one because it doesn’t offer anything new. It is way too similar to the above-mentioned songs.

‘Yeh hum aa gaye hain kahan’ again takes the album back on the road of romance. Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan render this simple and sweet tune beautifully. Again, here it is proved that singers contribute a lot to a song.

‘Do pal ruka’is a sweet song by Sonu Nigam and Lataji. This one takes you back to the 60’s. Its stanzas starting with ‘tum the ya…’are beautiful.

‘Kyun Hawa’ is a slow and simple song by Sonu and Lataji. There is some sort of ‘speech’ in the beginning by Yash Chopra. I guess it was supposed to be romantic and poetic but I found it extremely boring. Thankfully, Sonu’s soothing voice takes over soon.

Lataji renders ‘Hum To Bhai Jaise Hain’ with usual expertise. It is a simple but fast-paced and likable song.

‘Aaya Tere Dar Par Deewana’ is a medium-paced qawwali. Again- very regular fare, nothing different or special.

The much-needed break is provided in the form of ‘Lodi’ - a typical typical Punjabi dance number. Lata Mangeshkar, Udit and Gurdas sing this foot-tapping number. Excellent use of dholak, heavy Punjabi influence and effective use of chorus add quality to this song.

After this folk song, the album takes the rare route- it features a gazal sung by two legends- Gazal maestro Jagjit Singh and Lataji. ‘Tum Pass Aa Rahe Ho’ is awesome- slow, enthralling, a truly musically enriching experience.

The last song of the album is a solo by Lata Mangeshkar. ‘Jaane Kyun’ is a claasic, rich and slow song that takes you back to the 50’s-60’s.

This amazing musical journey starts with ‘Tere Liye’ and ends with ‘Jaane Kyun’-both songs truly belonging to the 50s-60’s…thus, the circle is completed and you get a feeling of being transported to the Golden Era.

I am quite allergic to the Chopra-Johar genre of movies and ‘Veer-Zaara’ certainly doesn’t interest me as a movie, but as a music album, it is simply great.
