The Coca Cola company,in my opinion, has a lot to answer for. This American based company produces a range of soft drinks that just about the whole world consumes. Ask any kid whether they live in Afghanistan or Zimbabwe to name a famous American product and the chances are good they will say Coca Cola.

In recent years Coca Cola have introduced new versions of their old standby. Cherry coke, diet coke and lemon coke appeared and then in May 2002 they launched their latest vanilla coke in North America. it is now available in the UK both in regular and diet versions, at a cost of around 80 pence for a 500 ml bottle. I know it is also widely available in India, but I am not precisely sure of the retail price.

Among the ingredients are :

Carbonated water

Caramel colour

Phosphoric Acid

Potassium

Nitrate

Citric Acid

Natural Flavourings

I am not much of a soft drinks fan but my youngest daughter insisted I went along to the local supermarket and bought a bottle of the latest offering from the coca cola company. It is, I believe ,also available in cans.

Feverishly twisting the bottle top off and pouring into a glass full of ice cubes I took my first swig of vanilla coke. Ok what was my initial reaction you might ask ? Was it smooth and intriguing ? Was it thoroughly refreshing ? Was is it thirst quenching ? Well sorry to disapppoint but I found it rather unappealing-not so super at all. I thought the vanilla taste was somewhat overpowering and the whole thing rather mediocre. My next conclusion was that it should not be drunk as a stand alone drink. Perhaps it would be more tolerable if used as a mixer with a glass or two of vodka, rum or whisky.

According to coca cola's website the natural vanilla flavour is extracted from vanilla beans and this creates the distinctive flavour of vanilla coke. Well I am afraid that personally I dont find it very palatable but there again I have never really been a fan of carbonated soft drinks, sodas and what have you.

My final verdict- nothing to write home about. Mix it with a proper drink and it might just be tolerable. If you really do like the taste of vanilla, then you might just like it as a stand alone drink. Personally I still prefer its big rival, you know which one.

Thanks a lot for reading and rating.

Cheers
