A good movie retold but not exactly to the same level as the master.
Comparisons are obvious.
There was Rekha - the origianl adakaara. Here we have Ash and she can't take over the show like the diva herself.
The movie is well taken. Here Umrao Jan tells her story. Sunil Shetty plays villain. The dresses adn sets are all very well desinged and executed. But it does fall a bit short of classic. Its just popcorn class not worth collector item. I have seen both variants of the movies.
Javed Akhtar gives us another taste of his lyrical mastery.
Alka Yagnik has poured her heart out on the songs . She should and wil lget an award for this movie songs.
AnnuMalik has done a decent job. For a change he didnt copy his own tunes but still it does not match up to the lyrics and the class of music expected of the movie of this kind. And neither is it bad. Pehle pehel and Salaam are my favourites.
The movie has touches of Meenakumari's Pakeezah, a bit of forced acting by Ash who somehow doesnt seem comfortable in her role. In comparison she gavea superlative performance in Devdas and now again in Dhoom 2.
The makers have tried to stick in various shade of other older movies in a bid pt make it look "DIFFERENT". But it falls short of critical measure.
Its just a "watch once and forget " movie.
Last but not least you seem to get hint of Ash and Abhi romancing around.
