Lata Mangeshkar has sung with almost all the prominent music directors of yesterdays and today’s.   But the fact is that she has sung maximum numbers of songs with the music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal, to be precise, as many as 666 songs.  With due respect to all the prominent music directors let me brief you about contribution to the Hindi Film Music by the team of Lata Mangeshkar & Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Lata and Laxmikant-Pyarelal combination have delivered some of the most melodious songs to the Indian Film Industry.   Lata and Laxmi-Pyare had a wonderful relationship, may be because of that she sung maximum numbers of varieties of the songs under the banner of L-P. During the sixties and seventies, there seem to have been several songs of Lata with L-P, which had a distinct Punjabi flavor, Western, Folk, Mujara, Lori, Gazal and Indian Classical etc.

Lata was obviously Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s first choice.  There are certain films like, Sati-Sawitri(1964), Lootera(1965), Sharafat(1970),  Abhinetri(1970) and Mera Gao Mera Desh(1971) and many more in which all the songs are sung by Lata.

  • Jeeven Dor Tumhi Sang Bandhi *  “Sati-Sawitri”(1964)

Good lyrics, each and every word has a meaning.  Excellently composed, one of the best song of raag ‘Yaman Kalyan’. Lata’s personal favorite.

  • Nind Kabhi Rehatee Thi Aankkhon Main Ab Rehate Hai *  “Aasra”  (1965)

Excellent words, use of Flute and Santoor is superb. Listen carefully when Lata sings the word ‘Sanwariya’.

  • Suno Sajana Papihe Ne *  “Aaye Din Bahar Ke”  (1966)

One of the sweetest songs based on “Pahadi” Raag.  The beginning of the song itself is very good, when Lata starts with Aa aaaa. Before starting to sing ‘Suno Sajana’

  • Main Dekhu Jis Aur Sakhiree Samane Mere Sanwariya*   “Anita”  (1967)

Catchy, sweet and melodious song.  Listen to the humming by Lata in the beginning of the song.

  • Meri Zindagi Ke Chirag Ko Teri Be_Rukhi Ne Buza Diya*   “Jaal”  (1967)

Excellent gazal composition, the  lyrics by Raja Mehandi Ali Khan.

  • Udate Pawan Ke Sang Chalungi, Ruk Ja Ai Hawa *   “Shagird”  (1968)

Perhaps the sweetest melody song of Lata-LP combination.

  • Wo Hai Zara Khafa Khafa*  (with Rafi)… “Shagird”  (1969)

Foot stepping, western style, sweet and melodious song.  Lata’s personal favorite.

  • Koi Nahi Hai Phir Bhi Hai Muzko Kya Jane *  “Patthar Ke Sanam(1968)

When I listen this song I feel that I am in Kashmir.  Beautiful song.

  • Chalo Sajana Jahan Tak Ghata Chale*  “Mere Humdam Mere Dost”  (1969)

Delicately sung by Lata.  Lata’s tender voice is in the beginning is excellent.  Nice use of western instruments along with Santoor. Lata’s personal favorite.

  • Jare Kare Badara Balam Ke Paar*  “Dharati Kahe Pukar Ke”  (1969)

Yet another sweet melody, from Lata-LP combination.  The use of Dholak is excellent so does Lata’s delicate voice specially used for this song.

  • Aa Jan-E-Ja Aa Mera Ye Husn Jawan*  “Intquam”(1969)

One of the best, western classical, songs in the History of Indian Film Music. It is only LP and Lata can deliver it.

  • Zilmil Sitaron Ka Aangan Hoga*  (wirh Rafi) . “Jeevan Mrityu”  (1970)

Ever-fresh song.  Excellent melody.

  • Duniya Ne Sunli Hai Chupake Se Apani Prem Kahani*  “Sharafat”  (1970)

All the six songs are sung by Lata and all of them are excellent in “Sharafat”.

This particular song is a nice combination of Mujara/Gazal/Clasical song.

  • Kajara Laga Ke Re Bindiya Saja Ke*  “Jal Bin Mchhali Bijali….”  (1971)

This V. Shantaram’s classic film has all the songs well but this song is a special one.

  • Sajana O Sajana. Sajana Mere Sajana Sun Kya Kahe *  “Abhinetri”(1971)

The best of Lata-L.P. combination. Dholak and Santoor are nicely used. Lata’s humming is superb.

  • Darde Dil Bdhata Jaye Sari Sari Raat Nind Na Aaye * … “Buniyad”  (1972)

Western style song with good melody.

  • Roj Sham Aati Thi Magar Aaisi Na Thi* “Imtihan”(1973)

Melodious song based on western theme.  Best us of Irani Santoor and French Horn. Lata is excellent on high pitch.

  • Tuzase Milane Se Pehale Bhi Peete The Hum*  “Ponga Pandit”(1975)

  • Main Tulasi Tere Aangan Ki*  “Main Tulasi Tere Aangan Ki”  (1970)

  • Sheesha Ho Ya Dil Ho Aakhir Tut Jata Hai*   “Asha”  (1980)

  • Man Kyon Behaka Re Behaka*  (with Asha)  'Utsav'(1984)
