Cricket has a sport has attained unparalled success in India. It is a sport for the whole nation, almost a religion, where one billion Indians cheer, pray and watch cricket together. But over the past coupe of years, cricket has gained serious competition from rival spvrts such as football and formula one. The simple reason: the people simply don't have the time nor the inclination to wait for seven hours for the result to be declared. Worse is test-match cricket, where the poor spectator is made to watch frighteningly boring cricket for a period of five days before a result is acheived. So, the ICC did the sensible thing and created a brand new format for the paying public: the t20!

So, what's new?

Sides only have 20 overs to put up the runs on the board, meaning that we are liekly to see more sixes in a t20 match rather than an odi, where batsmen tend to value their wicket a lot more. Bowlers have been made to develop new deliveries, with more variations in their armoury than ever before. In this condensed format, it is mind over matter: the player who backs himself to deliver shall tatse success, raw skill accounts for almost nothing in the abrreviated form of the game.  We also have the free hit rule and the bowl out, to make games more exciting.

*What about you, the spectator?

*It is common knoledge that the ICC have come up with this format to entertain the spectators, give them a thrill a minute and nail-bitingly exciting finishes. T20 will do to the 21st century what odi cricket did to the 20th. This format takes the game right into the living room of the popcorn chewing, coke drinking and beer guzzing audiences. The pomp, the celebration and the colour give the game a festive air; something that a football match always manages to conjur with its 90-minute length. Also, pretty young things dance in the stands everytime the batsman find the boundary or the bowler frabs a wicket. The DJ in the ground plays loud music on such occassions, making the audience break into impromptu jives in the stadium! Let the good times roll!

*Who will perform well in this format?

*Certainly, fielding is an important facet of t20 cricket. Athleticism in the field is vital to lift the spirit of the bowler, who sometimes can feel helpless(as Stuart Broad wvuld say) when the ball keeps disappearing into the stands. You  need stamina and concentartion to keep playing hard, aggressive cricket. Big, strong arms and a qucim pair of legs can add those 20 runs tv the total which make all the difference. As a bowler, versatility is the name of the game.  A bowler must be able to bowl the yorker, slower one, doosra etc at random. These are the players whom I think are destined for greatness in t20:

  1. M.Hayden (aus)

  2. Y.Singh(ind)

  3. J.oram (nz)

  4. S. Afridi(pak)

  5. A.Gilcnrist(aus)

  6. S. Styris(nz)

  7. J. Mubarak(sl)

  8. B. Hogg(aus)

  9. S. sree santh(ind)

  10. J. Kemp(sa)

  11. S. Bond(nz)
