After 7.5 years of using a gear bike I had thought I should go for a gearless scooter. Like everyone I was confused which the options available. That's when I came across a list of various options on the internet.I zeroed in on Jupiter and it was totally worth the price. I’m writing this review after doing 3000 Kms in odo with 2 free services completed.
Looks Department :The front apron looks stylish especially the twin pilot lamps & the cute indicators. The headlight is powerful & class-leading I found the others in this segment were not so bright at night. Side profile was good but was a mix of Activa & Maestro. The rear again looks borrowed but the fuel cap looks out of place unlike Wego, but nevertheless its practical & you never need to get down to refuel. The boxy muffler gels well with side profile. The partially metal body is good and fit & finish is impressive and also reliable. Cheers for TVS for making this a quality product.
Features :The features in this scooter is countless & really make you fall in love with it.
12" alloy wheels looks the best & accompanied by front telescopic & rear gas shock(first in scooter) makes your ride really great. The tubeless tyres assure you have a tension free ride. The patented Centre stand is one of the highlight which is just a gentle push & your bike is parked without hassle. The external fuel tank makes your refueling easy. The front storage - Can accommodate a bulk of things still you have leg space left & this one is best in class. The underseat storage 17 Ltrs may fit few full faced helmet, but if you have a bigger head & so the helmet then a full faced one will not fit. An optional phone charger underseat is handy. 2 retractable hooks to carry your daily things in the front.
All said, now the instrument console which is where its class apart. You have economy indicator, now this serves few purpose which you might feel pleased. the Power & Economy will let you control your throttle twist to get better Fuel Efficiency(Green indicates you will have good FE & the orange means you will have to reach Fuel station soon). If you keep the engine on in idle position after 20 secs the orange light blinks to knock your head that fuel is getting wasted. A hidden feature when you put on your key, that the Power light(orange) will be lit if your battery health is low else the Economy light(green) will glow if battery is normal. Now the speedo/odo/fuel indicator is common & looks neat. On the top you have 4 lights 2 for left & right indicator on either ends, one for high beam & the other is refuel warning which might be redundant since you already have fuel indicator but its somewhat useful at times. Next is the switches in handle bar the yellow-red switches looks cool for horn & ignition. The rest of the switches you will find in any other bike but but but not the pass light. This is the coolest one I found, a very useful feature to overtake or cross the roads. The breaks are good enough & you have this rear break clip thats really helpful on inclined surfaces to park. An optional front glove box could have been given. Now find out scooters in market which has got such dozens of features and you will still think(Well! the New Wego 2014 has got them except pass light).
Comfort & Handling:The Seat foam is so cushion that you will never like to come out of the scooter & that makes your ride even more pleasurable. The handlebar from seat is upright at a good distance & its very comfortable. The handlebar is smooth & has good turning radius. The suspensions are set up at comfortable level not too harsh or not too soft. With a pillion the ride is heavenly. The leg reach to ground at snailing traffic or local errands is quite easy. This may be a discomfort for short people but then thats due to 12" wheels. Then only disappointment you get is with the pair of TVS tyres that is really slippery on wet/sandy surfaces. The confidence lacks when you have to turn at good speeds. I would recommend it to be changed to MRF/CEAT tyres after they are worn out. The vehicle moves confidently at slow speeds & you easily avoid doing a snake movement with handlebars. This is best when on slow moving traffic even with a pillion. Bad roads & pot holes are easily absorbed with only few jitters to yours hands & back, but you know its a scooter & not a bike to absorb everything and yes this handling of undulations is class leading which can give a run for money for Activa that lacks terribly here.
Ride Quality, Performance & Fuel Efficiency :One thing that lacks this bulky looking scooter is the pickup. From the word go the scoot takes time to cross from 0-30 with hiccups but once you cross 40 its such a smooth ride that you will never know you are reaching 70 or 75 Kmph. I think that should be taken care after few services. The engine is butter-smooth & feels stable with no vibes sent across. The noise from the engine is unbelievably low even after 3000 Kms which is a plus. The top speed you can possibly reach around is 85 Kmph. You will notice the engine getting nervous when you cross 75 Kmph. But thats not this scooter meant for. From my riding experience I am constantly getting 50 to 55 Kmpl mileage & thats a good news. I remember once I got 61 Kmpl when I rode consciously to get this figure. But this one(FE) may differ on riding habits of individuals. Considering the bulkiness built of this Jupiter I would have expected some more power fed to this beautiful engine. On the flick-ability side its top notch, not sure if Wego’s ’Body Balance’ is borrowed, but passing between vehicles in traffic is trouble-free with twists & turns at ease. Maneuverability is awesome & top class.
Verdict: Go for this Indian Make, you will never be disappointed. Of course you will have minor faults here & there but again we have no scooter on earth which is perfect & this one is near perfect package. Cheers for TVS! Happy riding.
Thanks,
Venky
