This must surely be the most over rated film of all time after Star wars.
Its the standard Tom Cruise fare... super stud with super capabilities, lady killer, temperamental genius, blah blah blah... gimme a break.
Story line.. hmm.. not much in it really, a big lot of macho action in the air type of a movie. Everybody elses performance, it seems, is secondary. No time is given to develop their characters, backgrounds etc., yet they play major roles in the film. Meg ryan is brought in for the pathos angle, so some emotional dodo's in the theatre (and there are always a good lot) can cry their eyes out.
What is good about the film is that it has amazing cinematography. Its worth watching the film just for that, I will give it this much.
Otherwise, unless you are a psuedo-hip-macho wannabe american fighter pilot, this film is worthless. The leslie neilson spoof (or part of) in Hotshots is better viewing, atleast the humour is watchable.
I have no idea why this film is such a major hit. Is it because at that time it was just the right thing to watch and appear to like? Or is it that if you say you didnt see the film you would be called without taste in films? I dont know really and I dont care. I would not recommend this film to anyone.
The sound track though is awesome. each and every number is fantastic and rightly deserve cult status. They are almost anthems.
Watch this movie alone. Please dont involve others in watching this sad drama. Wasted time.
