Movies - what a wonderful medium - You can have 100's of topics in various sections and the entire 100 topics under this section!!
So instead of writing about gangsters in a topic called 'Underworld' , I have the luxury of writing it under 'Movies' :)
My personal preference of the gangster movies are as ranked below:
5. Sarkar
What a remake! I respect RGV (Ramgopal varma) for just attempting to pull this off. Consider the scenario. The original (Godfather) is regarded worldwide as the best gangster movie ever. The actors (Brando and Pacino) are considered to have put in their best performances in it. The movie was a blockbuster super duper hit.
So what benefit can come of remaking it? It WILL be compared to the original. That will lead to only 2 opinions -1) Not as good as the original or 2) it's decent but then it was copied from the godfather- so everything was handed on a platter!!
Considering the above, I think RGV did a great job. Of course, I would not consider it as a great movie, but it was very very good. Both the B's were fantastic in their respective roles. kay Kay did a great job as the 'gone bad' son.
Keep it up, RGV.
4. Company
The corporatization of the underworld!! This was unique because this was the first time we saw a structured underworld with ethics and rules.
Ajay Devgan was mindblowing as the cool dude gangster and Vivek Oberoi gave what I think is still the best performance in his career.
3. Vaastav
Sanjuuu rocks!! Finally Sanjay Dutt did the role which I think suits him the most! that of a Gangster!!! Add to it a wonderful story, script and direction and Vaastav is a movie which you cannot and should not miss..
2. Satya
Shock and Awe!! That was my first reaction when I watched this movie for the first time. Never before (or after) has there been a starker, clearer, cruder picture of the underworld.
Manoj Bajpai as Bhiku Mhatre was probably a better gangster than some real life gangsters! What a performance!
1. Agneepath
Vijay Dinanath Chauhan...poora naam... And topping the list is one of my all time favourite movies! This movie showing the rags to riches rise of a boy who dares to take on the entire underworld establishment had everything - a wonderful family(Rohini Hattangadi) ,a great friend (Mithun), a formidable opponent (Danny Denzongpa). The stage was set for AB to work around these frames and provide the dynamism to take this movie to greater heights! And man, did he deliver and how!
If you haven't seen this movie, there is something incomplete in your life! Go NOW
and rent a dvd.
Appreciate your comments and ratings!!
