I read all the time and according to me a good book is one that cannot be put down once I start reading it. Everyday the worst part of my day is when I HAVE to stop reading and get off the bus to go to office. If I were to rate one book as my favorite I would name it without a moment?s hesitation: it has to be ?To kill a mockingbird?
Though the book is meant for adolescent reading I read it quite late in life and maybe that?s the reason I could appreciate it so much. The book revolves around three main characters a father and his two children a son and a daughter. The beauty of the book lies in the way the characters have been sketched, the way they interact with each other and build their relationships. What specifically fascinated me about this book was the subtlety with which the author shows the gradual strengthening of the bond between the characters.
The manner in which the undertone of a very strong and stable foundation of love between the father and son, father and daughter and the brother and sister is sketched is amazing. Without any frivolity or over emotionalism the author sketches bonds that are so natural and so close to the heart. Whether it?s the love between Aticus (the father) and Scout (the brattish daughter) or the respect between Aticus and Jem (the son) or the fighting and ?looking out for each other? between Scout and Jem; each of these are pieces of gems written by Harper Lee.
And I haven?t even mentioned the part where the African American is falsely accused and found guilty. But according to me the writer has just brilliantly used that plot to basically build relationships (not that it doesn?t make the book all the more fantastic)
I saw the movie later and though the movie watching experience was nothing compared to reading the book, I still feel the movie was able to do quite a lot of justice to the book.
