Vacation is a time to relax. So, you have to plan it judiciously.
When you are going on a vacation or out of town for sometime, you shouldn’t publicize or tell others about it as it may alert the burglars. You can stop the newspaper delivery temporarily. As regards the mail, you can request your neighbor or your friend to pick them up from your mailbox, while you are gone. When we were on vacation to India, our neighbor collected all our mails and handed them over to us.
You must also arrange to have the lawn mowed. It was snowing too much here when we left. So, we arranged with a person to shovel the snow till we arrive in St. John’s. Otherwise, your walkway will be fully covered with snow, and you won’t be able to take your car out, to report for duty after arriving. This tip is for the people who experience snow in their places.
You must leave information as to where you can be contacted in an emergency with a trusted neighbor and friend and ask them to keep an eye on your house in your absence.
The most important thing is to give your house a lived-in appearance. Blinds and curtains should be left in their normal position. You can use an automatic timer to turn lights on and off in your living room and bedrooms at appropriate time hours. That’s what we did while we left for India.
You can lower the sound of your telephone bell so that its ring can't be heard outside. I have seen some people leaving a radio playing, just to show that there are people inside. Well, these are all security measures, which you can consider trying.
Now, some tips for your safe travel…
Consider carrying minimum luggage. With a less luggage, you can enjoy the journey as well. You have to label each piece of luggage with your name and address.
Make sure that your luggage can be locked and keep your luggage close to you while waiting.
You can carry the wallet in an inside coat or in front trouser pocket. That’s what my husband does.
Always stay alert to what's happening around you.
If you are traveling to a foreign country, you need
to photocopy all documents, including passport, credit cards and tickets, before leaving home and store copies safe.
Keep all your jewelry and important documents in the bank locker.
Using traveler's checks and credit cards is safe instead of using cash whenever possible.
When you are on the road, always carry wallets, purses and bags securely. You must never leave your keys in an unattended car, even while running a quick errand or filling up with gas.
While driving, traveling on main roads is better. Map should be always with you to find the direction. Valuables like cameras, clothing etc should be locked in the trunk when you leave your car. At night, your car should be parked in a well-lighted area. Remember to lock doors and roll up windows. Traveling in groups is also safe.
When you increase your protection, you can really relax well in your vacation. So, enjoy your vacation and have a nice time!
