I guess every fiction work of an english author will be made into a Hollywood movie; the authors like Stephen King, Michael Crichton write novels assuming a movie would be made out of it I guess. But our Bollywood movies are not mostly out of novels, may be because there are not many writers who could write a novel that can be made into a movie. Never mind, there is one emerging - Chetan Bhagat.
The fact that his writings are being inspired for movies and stage plays(by groups like Evams) prompts this talented writer into that mode, may be. After a dramatic Five Point Someone(but interesting) and further dramatic One Night at the Call Center(but not interesting), Chetan Bhagat comes up with his third mistake! -'The 3 mistakes of my life'. I have never liked the previous 2 works of Chetan, except for his unique writing style. As they say for second marriages, me reading this book was triumph of hope over experience.
This is a story of a suicide attempt, who eventually survives to tell his story to Chetan Bhagat himself. This is the story of 3 friends and he is obviously one among them. One loves Cricket, he loves maths and business, and the third is a dumbo. The story has earthquake, religion, riots, love, sex and the thing that sells most in this country - Cricket. As you can see, a perfect bollywood material. There is nothing much to narrate about the story which is nothing special, but not too bad either.
There are hints of Chetan's brilliance - like being very relevant to today. You can see that how he crafts gmail, Orkut into the prologue. This style of writing gets you involved straight away. Also, there are only shades of Chetan's unique sarcastic humour. Still liked few things like Govind(the protagonist) mentioning almost everything in mathematical or business terms, for instance, mentioning his mother's cooking as her core competency. But these get diluted in a plot that just manages to keep the reader awake.
The characters in the 3 books dont change. Like, you can just change the name and associate with the character in the FPS or ONCC. As mentioned earlier, the plot could be much more matured. You could easily figure out the book has been just written to sell(masala stuff) rather than with an intent to write a good material. Chetan has much more potential than this and which is the first reason why the book disappoints. The author needs to grow up, before his books become a non-detail English book for 6th standard students.
Stil it could make a decent read, if you have no expectations out of it. So, for a final verdict on the book- One night light read with a rating of 5 point something on a 10 point scale.
