Sum of all fears is another edgy thriller based on a Tom Clancy best seller about government-agent Jack Ryan and adds a feel of a prequel to Ryan's films ('The Hunt for Red October', 'Patriot Games', 'Clear and Present Danger'), even though it's set in the present, not the past.

A small faction of Neo-Nazis finds itself in control of a nuclear warhead, and generates plans to detonate it at a large gathering of American citizens. Their goal: To create mass hysteria and pin the blame on the Russians, thus triggering off a nuclear war and wiping major nations off the face of the earth. Phew!!!!…………..so dangerous.

Jack Ryan, a greenhorn at CIA, has just joined the bureau as an analyst. One of his strengths is his intimate knowledge of Russian President Nemerov (Ciaran Hinds), which comes in handy once US Intelligence gets wind that something might be stirring in the former Big Red nation. Ryan's job is simple. Along with his boss, CIA Director, William Cabot (Morgan Freeman), he has to keep U.S. President Fowler (James Cromwell) up to speed on the chain of events unfolding after the warhead is stolen, while keeping the shifting lines of communication open between Fowler and his Russian counterpart, President Nemerov. But convincing his superiors without hard proof is another matter and Ryan frantically embarks on a global jaunt to gather evidence before both nations' start annihilating each other and in turn the world.

In light of the most recent terrorist warnings and the 9/11 attacks on the US, this edgy thriller about a lost nuclear weapon resonates with timely apprehension and dread. Though one cannot overlook the fact that Baltimore has just been expunged from the map, we are still forced to endure a feel-good happy ending on the White House lawn in which everybody smiles and Affleck gets engaged.

'The Sum of all Fears' is very well directed from beginning to end by Phil Alden Robinson.

Another downside is that Ben Affleck is not an action hero - he doesn't look the part nor does he seem comfortable with it. As Ryan, he lacks the toughness and presence of his predecessor played by Harrison Ford. If Ben Affleck is a disappointment, the same cannot be said of the supporting players. Although criminally underused, Morgan Freeman brings his usual sense of dignity to his role. James Cromwell is suitably presidential as Fowler, and Ciarán Hinds (perhaps best known as the male lead in the most recent adaptation of Jane Austen's 'Persuasion') represents the Russian leader as a man of honor. Clancy's tale provides an insider's understanding of what goes on in the corridors of power. That knowledge adds up to a forceful 'The Sum of All Fears'.

Dear friends so do watch this movie and expect a stellar lineup, concentrated action, and a truckload of tension. Enjoy………………….
