They say Nicholas Sparks is an amazing author. He sure is. However, it has been my observation that almost all the movies made based on his books have surpassed the books themselves.
The Lucky One is one such movie. Starring Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, this sensitive movie is about a discharged US Marine Sargent Logan Thibault who embarks on a walking journey to find a woman he identified based on a photograph that he found in war zone on the morning of a night that saw him being ambushed by enemy forces. As he goes to pick up the photo that lies on the ground a short way off, the place he got off blows up in flames. He begins to think that the woman in the photo was his saviour. Another incident shortly thereafter reinforces his belief.
He is convinced that the woman was the one who gave him life, and he sets out to search for her to thank her. When he reaches Green Kennels, the place the lady is working from, he is swept off his feet by her beauty and speechlessly agrees to stay on to help the woman Beth Clayton and her mother, who are running a dog training business. They do have a 9-year old, Beth's son, Ben who Logan soon begins to befriend.
The thorn in the side is Keith Clayton, ex-husband of Beth and the local town sheriff, whose dad is planning to run for the upcoming mayoral elections. Sincerely interested in Ben's welfare, he resents Logan's arrival and stay at the Green Kennels and makes many attempts to confront Logan, get him thrown out and even almost kills the latter.
In the final sequences, there is tragedy that unfolds, but love triumphs in the end.
A must-see movie. Efron as the under-dramatic ex-soldier who sets out to thank an unknown woman but ends up being a part of the latter's life is very convincing. Taylor as Beth is simply superb. She essays her role of a loving mother torn between the desire to be with Logan and the urge to appease Keith so as not to lose her son very poignantly.
The music is aptly romantic. The story is a bit mushy, but believable. The scenic areas where the movie has been shot makes the setting very realistic.
