Middle Earth movies have always succeeded in entertaining the audience to the core with edge of the seat thrill and dark adventure. The final installment in The Hobbit series fulfill the expectations but fails to leave a mark like predecessors.
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies begins exactly where The Desolation Of The Smaug abruptly ended. The End to the Dragon was well induced in the beginning of the finale movie and forms the best part of the movie.
Following the death of the Smaug, Humans, Dwarfs, Elves, People of Gundabad and Orcs start marching towards the mountain of Erebor to establish their hold. But in Erebor lies the dark shadow of the dragon which instills a disease in the hearts of the possessor of the gold.
The build up for the final battle is applaudible. Screenplay is as colorful as the other Hobbit Movies. This movie too shares some light hearted moments that succeed to get good laugh at times. Special Effects are, as expected, out of the world.
First half is the build up for the battle which begins as soon as the second half starts and continues till the end leaving 15 min to conclude the series.
Though build up was fascinating, the battle sequences were a big disappointment. The brother of the king of Dwarfs seem to kill Orcs by smashing on their iron ladden heads with his bare forehead. War sheep are seen climbing the steep mountain with the same speed as they run on the flat surfaces.
It took days for Bilbo and company to reach Eldemor but the dwarf army was just a raven away. It makes no sense how the king come to his senses at the end when he fails to give up gold and fight due to gold sickness.
Also, with negligible army left at the end and another full-fledged reinforcement of Orcs coming from Gundabad, Dwarfs and Elves end up wining the battle. How they win is not shown except that their hidden king comes out to fight with his 13-15 dwarf friends. Also, they climb mountain in seconds.
Where did the final army of Gundabad disappear? What was the significance of the Eagles of Gondolf in the war? Well, some things remain unknown for the sake of the end of series, I guess.
Finale is as fimly as Bollywood where the Orcs leader Azog, dies at a strike but the injured hero(Thorin) walks up till the cliff sees his army gaining victory, wait for Bilbo to come and then falls into Bilbo's arms before breathing his last and uttering final words.
If there is anything that has gone wrong is the script. As the name of the series is Hobbit, Bilbo was supposed to be the lead character of the movie and not Thorin.
Also, movie omits many big sequences present in the book. Lot of questions are left unanswered, for example, What happens to the left out gold, for which the entire battle was fought?
Martin Freeman as Bilbo is as charming as always. Richard Armitage startles with his extraordinary performance as Thorin.
Ian McKellen is reverential, Evagelina Lilly's cuteness lingers like her unwanted love story. Orlando Bloom is also good.
As for the final verdict of the movie, it depends on the individual.
If the person has not read the hobbit book and has likes the earlier two hobbit movie, then he would end up liking this movie too but if it is the other way, then sorry, disappointment is for sure.
My Rating: 3/5
