The Hindu is one of the oldest newspapers in India, beginning its illustrious journey way back in the year 1878. It a bit different from the other eminent newspapers like the Times Of India(TOI), The Hindustan Times(HT), The Pioneer etc. The aforementioned papers stand out as standard newspapers with quality content in their own right but the Hindu has also got its dedicated reader-base. Here's why I think it is different:

1) The Hindu comes filled with select news from across the whole country and the world. It does not provide the reader with just any news item, only those having real relevance to the time. And still, the news coverage is wide-ranging.

2) It carries the minimum number of advertisements that I've seen in any newspaper till now. So that leaves space for more reading material.

3) It covers news spanning the length and breadth of India, from the North to the South and from the East to the West. It has separate pages dedicated to news from North and South India. Not many papers have that.

4) A lesser coverage of local news is a relief as it allows the newspaper to include better articles and write-ups.

5) The Editorial is spread over two pages and as in any newspaper, it is the best part because of the informative, educational, and thought-provoking articles and columns on national and international issues by eminent columnists.

6) An excellent sports and business coverage.

7) Friday Review, a 12-page supplement containing articles on classical music, dance, drama, theatre, books(rare reviews of Hindi books too under the title'Hindi Belt'), social, political, and cultural issues, is a treat to read.

8) The Hindu on Sunday is, in my opinion, like a collector's edition. It is priced at Rs. 15(The Northern Edition) but also gives you more than 40 pages of quality reading material, consisting of supplements like The Hindu Magazine(8 pages) and The Hindu Literary Review(4 pages). And I collect the Sunday editions!

9) The Hindu Literary Review is a supplement completely dedicated to books and literature. In other newspapers, you get a page or two about books, latest or otherwise, but in The Hindu, you get full four pages strewn about with discussions and reviews about just books.

10) It does not cover news items which may be not of use to many like page-3 parties and the like.

11) Huge font sizes for headings just to cover the paper are not used.

12) Correspondents and freelance journalists from across the whole wide world contribute articles to this famed newspaper.

The Northern Edition is a bit pricey as its price on weekdays is Rs. 10.

It's a great newspaper. People who get irked by the flood of advertisements in today's newspapers should definitely try reading it. They might just find themselves as devoted readers after a week or so.
