I brought in 'The Guru' with a fair amount of anticipation, what with the talk that was going on on E!Tv and all about the movie. What a let-down! (that's an understatement actually)
The movie
Boy has dollar dreams, wants to make it big in acting. Ends up in the X-rated movie industry with the succulent Heather Graham and falls in love with her (natch). She teaches him how to 'perform' better in front of the camera with all sorts of empty (IMHO) advice such as be comfortable with your body etc.. He passes off her advice as his own and becomes a 'Sex Guru' (yeah right). Girl ends up falling for the (ugly) guy too but discovers his plagiarism which breaks her heart (boo hoo). Guy gets girl at the end.
My rendition
In my humble opinion, the movie-makers were simply looking to attain the following:
Get an Indian guy with a gori gal.
Get sex in the movie.
Get some pseudo-mystical characteristic of India to make it seem authentic.
Make it as low-budget as possible.
Coupled with horrifying attempts at humour and Indian males (the hero's roomies) made out to be salivating, lascivious people, made me hate the movie just a tad more. I mean what's with this image that is constantly being portrayed on screen that Indian guys are always lewd and/or libidinous? It's shameful. And also, the 'hero', whose name I dunno, was some unpretty guy with eyes constantly lined with a LOT of Kajal!! What was HE thinking??
T'was a complete waste of time. Consider yourself warned!
