If there is one music album that should be listened from beginning to end, its Pink Floyd's ''Division Bell''. The dreamy tunes, lush, haunting soundscapes in this album transport you to a different world altogether. The depth, the emotion, the mettle and the voice of incomparable David Gilmour are awesome. He writes the unimposing lyrics with amazing passion, and sings every line as though it is ''felt'' and not merely sung.
The album kicks off typically with the instrumental opener 'Cluster One'
Cluster One; What a way to start the album. You feel so tingly listening to this hypnotic gentle guitar and piano in this track.
What Do You Want From Me ; Cluster one slowly fades into this second song. The chorus in the song is a classic flyodian odyssey. The touching lyrics
''Sell your soul for complete control,
Is that really what you need?''
with the vindictive accusatory tone rises this song to its greatness.
Poles Apart; is about the reflective sentiments of the Pink Flyod group, first verse
''you were always the golden boy there
And that you'd never lose that light in your eyes''
is about Syd Barrett, the second verse is about Roger Waters,
'' The rain fell slow, down on all the roofs of uncertainty
I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me
I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes''
Marooned; is a Grammy winning instrumental track with a long guitar solo with emotion and magical air to it.
A Great Day For Freedom; This is Gilmour's trademark track.
''Now life devalues day by day
As friends and neighbours turn away
And there's change that, even with regret, cannot be undone.''
All floyd's wall fanatics love this song.
Wearing The Inside Out; Starts off with a gentle and smooth saxophone and grows on you as it remelts to rocking guitar. This track is so laid back and relaxing, it'll make you almost horizontal.
Take It Back ; Someone said ''Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life, How true! Just listen to this song, whenever I listen to this song it keeps me dancing and leaves a marvelous feeling.
Coming Bank To Life; This is one of my all time favorites.. When Gilmour sang
''The things you say and the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself someone else's words.
Dying to believe in what you heard.................''
he sang three of the best lines in rock music I ever heard. And the way he sang it was the best he had ever sang for Pink Floyd. This song really rocks my world.
Keep Talking; is a signature Floyd classic with a blend of amazing effects, a voice over, dazzling keyboard and excellent lead guitar. Its about talking, the lyrics
''I feel like I am drowning
I am feeling weak now.......''
may sound depressing but have a lot of substance as communicating is important in our daily lives.
Lost for Words; This is my all time personal favorite
''I was spending my time in the doldrums
I was caught in a cauldron of hate
I thought that everything else would just wait...........''
Whenever I close my eyes and listen to this melody, its as if I am instantly transported to a good mood. As you sing along the lyrics you visualize a depressing soul sitting in isolation and engulfed in a fever of spite. You soon realize that the soul could be you and you punch the rewind button.
High Hopes; is a very powerful and a gem of song. And what a way to finish. This song will give your stereo a good testing.
It may be a Roger Waters-less Pink Floyd album, but it gives a flyodian feeling throughout. I think Pink Floyd music is greater than the individuals creating it. The art work of steel heads on the album cover adorn my computers as wallpapers. I have three copies of this album. One at home, one in office and one in the car. Do you need convincing any more?
This album is a MUST BUY for all avid Pink Floyd fans. It is a primer for budding Pink Floyd fans and will appeal to even a casual music lover.
Seasons Greetings !
