Before getting into review on Thanga Vettai, we have to know about the other show, Jackpot coming on JAYA TV, the SUN TV's rival.
Jackpot, which proved a game show can be popular among the Tamil audience. The show was conceived well and it gave the ratings the TV needed, more consumers to the Milk brand and a great comeback to the darling of Tamil cinema. Khusboo had the Tanglish accent a basic requirement for the hosts was an added advantage.
Khusboo made the show as a Jacket Pot and no wonder it pulled all the women audience. Women started watching it for her attire and the milk packets distributed along with it. Another reason is the show was aired during the NEWS time in commonly watched SUN (in cities) and DD (in rural areas) another NO, NO to majority of womens.
The game show has nothing much to do with intelligence or knowledge. Except the challenge round, every other rounds were based on common sense. We have witnessed the dumb participants too.
Being the only game show on prime time it become a huge hit. SUN TV too had its own shows but all failed to pull the audience.
Will Thanga Vettai hosted by Ramya Krishnan the Padaiyappa girl give a tough fight to Jackpot?
SUN TV might had the doubt and it has to fight another rival VIJAY TV which is airing dubbed version of Kaun Banega Krorepathi hosted by BIG B. So they chose 9-10 PM Saturday and Sunday. SUN TV always think big and the show is launched in Gemini and Surya as well.
This game show has little chance to fail this time. They learnt the trick by pulling the female stars in the show. Ramya in SUN, Radhika in Gemini and Oorvasi in Surya are anchoring the show. The name in Surya ''Swarna Mazha'' is even more appealing and apt.
Actually the producer RADAN owned by RADHIKA will be laughing all the way to the bank with this hatrick show.
The concept is new and it has a bigger pot to offer than Jackpot. They don't have to think again whether it will attract the audience it needed. The prize money is actually soverigns of GOLD a rare and sky rocketing commodity now.
It has its own initial hickups due to the novice hosting ability for Ramya krishnan. I guess after 5-10 shows she will make it watchable. This week show was better when compared to last time. Her voice is so sweet and speaks better Tamil. She was able to gel with the participants.
Jackpot viewers were kept in dark about the minute details of Khusboo's wardrobe(??). Wow. What a way to make the difference. In an interview, the producer of the show, Radhika has promised everyone will talk about Ramya's dress. She did. So one of the participating team member was trained to ask casually about what she's wearing. Then Ramya as a puppet picking the cue will share about necessary info the Tamil women folks want to hear and the husbands, want to change channel worrying about their wallet condition.
Chennai silks is already popular and womens are going on pilgrimage to the shop from northern parts of Tamilnadu. Like where southern families going down to Tirunelveli in search of RMKV's. Ramya sharing even the micro mini details of the Saree she sports, the temparture is raising. Another successful brand in Tamilnadu using the media efficiently to its core.
This kind of information sharing might be a plus for some weeks and it might turn a minus once people know they are all out of their reach. Poor guys! they are the one going to feel the heat anyway.
There are few drawbacks to this show.
The set size was small and more egyptian dummies occupy the already tiny space which makes the set look like chaotic.
After choosing the egyptian dummy as a back drop, there is no alternative than going for earthy tones. With dark reds, dark greens and yellow lights make the set even more dark. Ramya also wears almost red, orange or brown. That makes it look like everything happens in a dark place. The bigger the size of the set with more open space would have worked.
The back ground music and the opening music was pathetic. I don't understand why every show tries to imitate the ''Who wants to be a millionaire'' in lighting and BGM.
With all that drawbacks and Ramya's initial anchoring troubes, I don't want to underestimate this show. Wish Ramya will make it happen in the coming weeks and it will continue as long as the sponsors were able to pay for the gold.
I will review my product rating based on how the show performs. For now, I will give only 3 stars.
