Fitness is very important in tennis at all levels of playing.
We have had several Indian players who have several players who
have won Junior Wimbledon but in the senior grade they could not sustain ot make the grade.
Ramnathan Krishnan & Vijay Amritharaj may be the exceptions.
These two players at least reached the semifinal stage in Wimbledon.
The fact that our youngsters do well in the junior stage
is because at this stage they are able to combat the brawn with
control, brain and finesse. At the senior level their physical and muscular development
falls behind and this leave them significantly at a lower level.
one must combat this lacking with planned diet with adequate proteins
and resistance exercise to build the muscular strength without loss
of speed, flexibility and reflexes. Physical fitness
is now a very scientifically developed field. This can be
applied to our young tennis players as well as all other sportsmen
who are aspiring for national and international honours.
The sportsperson must also undergo training in mental fitness
and approach tailored to the various crunch situations
that one comes across in the competitions.
