Hi ya folks!
This is the most toughest category one can write in. ARR's top 10 songs, are you kidding? It is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Anyways, I did my research, and based on some voting/sorting/re-voting on my own, I came up with this list.
The criteria for this was, taking a comprehensive list of all songs he has done so far(I have listened to all of them.;-). First vote was a yes/no. Finally, I gave how many times I can listen without any problem. After that, I shortlisted and chose a list. I then re-voted and finally decided this list.
I know there are many worthy candidates. I am trying list them all in the comments section.
1. Kaadhal Rojave / Chinna Chinna Aasai(Roja)

Who can forget the introduction this maestro had?. Getting a thunderous introduction through one of the greatest indian directors, Mani Ratnam. It seems like yesterday when I listened to this jingle about 11 years ago. I can still remember the shock(by surprise) and happiness I had when I listened to this song on TV for the first time.
A clear use of all instruments, wonderful beats. The songs that made AR Rahman Famous. Clearly, they stand as the best tunes, according to me
2. Margazhi Poove(May Madham)

maargazhip poovae maargazhip poovae
unmadi maelae oaridam vaendum
meththai mael kangal moodavum illai
un madi saernthaal kanavugal kollai

This is a song, beautiful in everysense. ARR's music is one of the few great things associated with this otherwise forgettable film.
This song has a beautiful base tone from the suprabhadam and wonderful use of excellent instruments. The combination of ARR & Vairamuthu make the song-listening an experience.
To my knowledge, there cannot be another pair that could be beaten. Way to go you guys!
3. Enge Enathu Kavidhai( Kandukondein Kandukondein)

enge enadhu kavidhai - kanavile
ezhudhi madiththa kavidhai
vizhiyil karaidhu vittadho ammammaa
vidiyal azhithu vittadho
kavidhai thedi thaarungaL illai en
kanavai meettu thaarungaL

This movie is the Kollywood version of'Pride and Prejudice'. ARR's music is one of the great assets for this movie. This song is an excellent mix of lyrics and music.
The music drives the lyrics and makes you hum. The lyrics is a little tougher to comprehend otherwise.
4. Snehidane Snehidane/Kaadhal Sadugudu(Alaipayudhe - Saathiya original)

Male:

The greatest song of 2000. Beautifully rendered by Sadhna Sargam in a hindustani background. This was a chartbuster, as soon as the album was released.
Sadhna Sargam is exceptional, given her hindustani background.
Kadhal Sadugudu is exceptional in all aspects, lyrics/music and the wonderful picturization.
5. Kaadhal Kaditham ketkave - Jodi(Doli Sajake Rakhna -Ho, Qissa hum likheNge, dil-e-beQaraar kaa)
This song was a hit in both languages. In Tamil, it made a listening experience. One of the chartbusters of 1998/99.
6. Telephone Manipol/ Pachchai Kiligal - Indian
Who can forget the trend initiating song by the blockbuster director Shankar. This was so popular in 1995 that everyone made it a trend to followup in the subsequent movies.
This loop was copied by many in many a tunes.
7. Konjam Nilavu(Chandralekha) - Thiruda Thiruda
This song is an exceptional one, in a music sense. It generates sheer excitement by the way it builds up. Unspoken lyrics being rendered by your mind. When all is done, you listen to the subtle music and https://lyrics. Wonderfully done.
8. Vennilave Vennilave - Minsara Kanavu(Chanda Re - Sapnay)
This is the song that got national awards for four people. This is an exceptional song. A visual splendor and beautiful music to support great choreography.
9. Tanha Tanha(Rangeela)/ Thaniye Thaniye.
This is how he entered bollywood. With a bang. Who can forget this chartbuster of 1995/96. Beautifully done.
10. Kannukku Mai Azhagu - Pudhiya Mugham
This is an exceptional song. Lyrics were as beautiful as the music itself. The combination of ARR/Vairamuthu needs to be brought to attention again, here.
One of the all-time melodious wonder.
Bottom-line
Being a great fan of ARR and having almost all his songs in MP3, he is someone who inspires me daily via his music.
I am sure his best is yet to come. As his/my mother tongue is Tamil, I think I justified choosing the best that comes from my heart.
I just wanted to make sure, I am doing justice to his songs by selecting the top 10 in my opinion. I am sure there will be a lot of questions as he has produced so many gems.
I will list out additional gems in the comments section.
Have nice day listening
