2005 was not only a year of great Bollywood movies and melodious soundtracks but it was also a year in which all the actors tried their level best to come out with good performances.There was strong competition between all the Bollywood actors which made it difficult for the viewers to decide that who ruled throughout the year.From established and seasoned actors to lesser known actors and newcomers, everyone tried their best to impress the viewers but the following actors were the ones whose performances I loved, in 2005:
1.Amitabh Bachchan-(Black):
Talent is always greater than age and Amitabh Bachchan has proved this point.Even at the age of 60+, he is the most hot and happening actor of Bollywood and he is still very much in demand, only because of his talent.The actor has aged out but his talent doesn`t seem to disappear.Infact, he is still getting better and better with every new release of his but the movie in which he left the strongest impression in 2005 was undoubtedly ”Black”.He did not only portray but also lived the role of an eccentric teacher who wants to achieve his goal.One cannot imagine anyone else but only Amitabh Bachchan, in the role of Debraj Sahai.
2.Rani Mukherji-(Black):
Here`s another one from “Black”.Rani Mukherji did an extra-ordinary job in a completely de-glamorized role of a blind and mute girl.Portraying the character of Michelle McNally was no easy task and had anyone else done this role, she would have gone overboard but Rani Mukherji was a complete natural and definitely managed to make viewers sympathize with Michelle McNally.Her face expressions were truly amazing like the fear she had on her face when her teacher forgets her on the street or the excitement she had on her face when she passes a university admission interview.The actress won lots of appreciation for her portrayal of Michelle McNally and rightly deserved it so.
3.Vidya Balan(Parineeta):
Almost every Friday, a new girl makes an entry in Bollywood but not every new girl manages to impress the viewers.There is something very magical about Vidya`s eyes.Just one look into her eyes will grab the attention of the viewer and it is her ability to make viewers attentive towards her that sets her apart from all the newcomers in Bollywood.She is one of those rare newcomers who has lots of talent and after watching her in “Parineeta”, I came to the conclusion that she will definitely become a very big star in future.
4.Kay Kay Menon(Sarkar):
If there was anyone who gave tough competition to Amitabh Bachchan in “Sarkar”, then it has to be Kay Kay Menon.As a defiant son, he was first-rate in “Sarkar” and looked very confident while acting with a much senior actor like Amitabh Bachchan.The actor gave a very confident and impressive performance, and his performance in “Sarkar” went on to prove that he is one of the most talented actor, Bollywood has today.
5. Pooja Batra(Taj Mahal- An Eternal Love Story):
After disappearing from movies for a long while, Pooja Batra made a comeback in “Taj Mahal” as Empress Noor Jehan and she surprised everyone who saw this movie.All those who have seen this movie, cannot deny the fact that Pooja Batra was definitely the best thing to happen to “Taj Mahal”.For the kind of role she portrayed in this movie, it was required that the actress playing this role of the scheming empress should have the attitude, arrogance, delicacy and gait of an Empress and very surprisingly Pooja Batra lived upto the requirements of this role.
6.Anupam Kher(Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara):
Playing the role of an aged man, whose memory has become weak is not so easy and Anupam Kher was brave enough to do such a challenging role.The actor portrayed the role of Professor Uttam Chaudhary brilliantly not even once going over the top.The helplessness on his face and the guilt of killing Gandhi that he expressed, throughout was worth praising. Only a seasoned actor of his caliber could have done justification to such a role.
7.Urmila Matondkar(Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara):
Urmila Matondkar may not be working in many films, nowadays yet the audiences are sure that the actress always tries to do something different and believes in doing quality work.The role that she portrayed in “Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara” required a talented actress like Urmila and Urmila lived the role she played in this movie.This performance was definitely one of her best performances ever.
8.Juhi Chawla(My Brother Nikhil):
In the role of a loving sister who decides to support her brother who is suffering from AIDS, Juhi Chawla played her role very convincingly.The concern she showed on her face and the love for her brother that she showed in her eyes made her performance look very natural.
9.Amrita Singh(Kalyug):
Not many actresses would like to play the kind of role, Amrita Singh played in “Kalyug”, that of a porn company owner.She looked seriously very dangerous and cunning throughout the movie and she shined in the scenes she had with her les*ian daughter. Hers was the kind of a role that required the actress playing it, to look DANGEROUS and had it not come out as something of that sort, it would have fallen flat on the face of the actress portraying that character. Luckily, Amrita Singh was able to do justification to the role.
10.Toby Stephens(Mangal Pandey-The Rising):
Toby Stephens shared a great chemistry with Aamir Khan in the role of Captain Gordon William.He looked very comfortable speaking in Hindi, despite not being an Indian and he was fabulous in the pre-climax scene where he tries to defend Mangal Pandey in the court.His performance was one of the biggest plus points of this film.
The above mentioned actors are the ones who highly impressed me through their path-breaking performances. Unfortunately, I didn`t see films like ”Iqbal”, ”Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose”, ”Apaharan”, etc. so I couldn`t include the actors of these films in my list.I have heard and I am sure that there are some great performances in these films and I will definitely catch up with these movies, soon. However, I`ve given my opinion on the performances I think were the best in 2005.
