This is one topic where tons of same movies have been listed in lots of reviews here and I am sure mine would also be no different. BUT I am going to try to list some which have not been placed in the reviews I read because I feel those movies deserve recognition.
- EK Doctor Ki Maut
This movie is one of my alltime favorites if not ''The Favorite'' The performance of Pankaj Kapur as a Brilliant yet Frustrated Scientist trying to cope up with the Corrupt Officials in the Medical Board in India was unbelievable, this movie won Best Director when National Awards came around for Tapan Sinha and Kapur did win a special award but not the Best Actor, I felt he was robbed big time. Be it his explosive moments in the movie, or a calm but dejected Shabana Azmi play trying to be a supporting wife or Vijayendra Ghatge who played a ''Practical'' doctor was an icing on the cake. If you get a chance to view this flick, DO NOT miss it.
- Sholay
The phrase ''Magnum Opus'' is completely Synonymous with this movie, Bollywood should be proud to produce this movie, agreed it was the not most original plot but it was one of the most original inspirations (From Old Westerns)that spoke volume on the screen. The Screenplay, Dialogues, Performances, Art Direction was impeccable. Many believe that Amjad khan's career was doomed because of this movie since people started expecting a ''Gabbar Singh'' performance from him in all his movies, something he never came quite close to. I believe there should be category on MouthShut (If it isn't already) on this movie.
- Namak Haram
I am HUGE fan of Hrishi Da (Hrishkesh Mukherjee) and have seen all of his movies, this movie stands out because of the social message that he tried to convey. The movie starts out funny, bringing back the nostalgic moments of ''Anand'' but soon shifts gears and now we are suddenly dealing with Union Workers, Strike, UnEmployment and Inflation, which is still the Core problem in India. This was time when Rajesh Khanna was ruling the roost and it was about time to give the torch to the Next (Perhaps the Last Indian Superstar) in line, Amitabh Bachchan who delivered one of his best performances. Great Music by Pancham Da was like ''Sone Pe Suhaga''.
- GolMaal
When it comes to Clean Comedy (Nowdays Comedy is often Mis-represented), this movie is an all time best. Amol Palekar's career never looked the same after this movie, as a Common Man's representative in a World of Hindi Cinema, he gave his best performance alongwith another legend Utpal Dutt. Bindiya Goswami's able support alongwith Shobha Khote and David make this movie the best entertainer.
- Pushpak
This is debatable whether this movie qualifies as ''Hindi Movie'', I say yes and here's my argument, ''There were no dialogues in this movie'' at least not between the characters of this flick. In my opinion this was a path breaking movie. It's like liking Tom and Jerry even though there is not dialogue, because every thing is black and white on the screen, there is no need for it. Brilliantly acted by Kamal Hasan and directed by Singeetham Srinivas, Pushpak is a winner al the way.
- Arth Satya
For those people that loved ''Shool'', ''Ab Tak Chappan'' and all those cop movies, they are all tributes to this great flick from Govind Nihalani who shows the frustrations of a cop caught up between Honesty and Corruption. Om Puri succeeds as Anand Patkar immensely. This movie also gave Hindi Cinema another versatile actor ''Sadashiv Amrapurkar'' although sadly enough he was stereotyped in a lot of movies. One of Govind's best.
- Kanoon
It was the time where Songs were the main ingredients of any Hindi Cinema and despite that B.R.Chopra had courage to make a court room thriller without songs. It's not just the fact of being courageous, it's the script and performance of this movie that makes me put it in this list. Ashok Kumar as an honest judge and Rajinder Kumar as his protege, was just a treat to watch. Watching this movie unfold itself was an experience I'll always cherish.
Kanoon can still be considered as one of the best ''WhoDunit''.
- Guide
I've talked about this movie in my other review and I am not going to deviated my thoughts about Guide here. If Dev Anand would be remembered for his performance in one film, this would be it. Under the able Direction of elder brother ''Vijay Anand'' Dev portrayed the character of a Tour Guide caught up between a married woman and the society, misunderstood as a saint. His performance was just phenomenal, it almost gives you a feeling, he was made for being a part of this movie. Guide also gets help in the acting department from Waheeda Rahman, Lila Chitnis and David. Music by Sachin Da was haunting with popular songs like ''Gata Rahe Mera Dil'', ''Tere Mere Sapne'' and ''Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai''. R.K.Narayan's great novel was transformed into a Marvellous movie.
- Parinda
Many people I've seen/heard shower praise for ''Satya'', ''Company'' and other gang movies but Parinda was one the early movies to portray Mumbai Underworld in a most realistic manner. The movie also gave us Nana Patekar as a commercial actor alongwith marking the arrival of Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Both (Nana, Vidhu) having art movie backgrounds finally had a commercial winner. The reason why I liked this movie so much was the performance of Jackie Shroff who silenced his critics with probably the best performance of his career. The cast was ably supported by Anil, Madhuri and Suresh Oberoi.
- Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron
With this movie arrived a new Genre in Hindi Cinema ''Political Satire''. Rib Tickling to say the least, it's by far the funniest movie ever made in India. This was conglomerate of the finest actors that Hindi cinema has seen like ''Naseer'', ''Om Puri'', ''Pankaj Kapur'', ''Satish Shah'', ''K.K.Raina'', ''Satish Kaushik'', ''Ravi Vaswani'' among others. If I had to pick a part from this, it has to be the enactment of ''Mahabharat'' towards the end. Kundan Shah's gift to Indian Cinema.
