I never was a huge fan of movies but when I read a review on this very topic I realized that I could write a review on it as most of the movies I had seen were romantics. So I managed to come up with a list of romantic movies, most of them my favourites. here they are.
Veer-Zaara
This shouldn’t be a surprise. I’m sure many of you selected this one for your lists, but I may be the first to put it at the first place. Veer-Zaara isn’t just a love story; it’s a love legend. The legend of the love Veer (Shahrukh Khan) and Zaara(Preity Zinta) had for each other, a love that couldn’t die even when they spent twenty-two years apart from each other. The movie is long, sad and tearful but happily it has a happy ending.
Parineeta
Incidentally, Parineeta is my favorite movie, but I didn’t put it as number one for obvious reasons. Parineeta tells the story of Shekhar(Saif Ali Khan) and Lolita(Vidya Balan), who were childhood sweethearts and there love has continued into adulthood. However, they do not realize how they feel about each other until the arrival of an outsider, a total stranger, Girish. Unknowingly to their parents, Shekhar and Lolita gets married but are separated when Shekhar leaves on a business trip. Lolita’s faith, courage and her love for her husband is what takes her through the loneliness and hard times. To me, Parineeta is a timeless classic of true love and devotion.
*Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
True love at college is rare or so at least is what Hollywood movies depict. Mostly it is all about hanging with your friends and different boys/girls. KKHH depicts a totally different scenario – true love at college, the love of Rahul **(SRK) and Anjali(Kajol). But in comes Tina (Rani) who steals Rahul’s heart and after college they get married and have a baby girl, Anjali named after their best friend. Tina dies giving birth to Anjali and it is only after her death Rahul realizes how much he had loved Anjali. Using her mother’s letters Anjali Jr. brings back rahul and Anjali Sr. back together again and all is happy. I’ve seen this movie seven times and I’ve cried every time I saw it. It is a cute, beautiful and wonderful love story. Nothing to candyflossy about it!
*Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
Having heard and read so much about this movie I was dying to see it and finally I saw it on VHS and I just had to disagree with what I’ve heard and read. Yes it is a great love story but not the greatest.maybe the greatest of **SRK and Kajol but still not the greatest of SRK. The greatest love story of SRK could be none other than Veer-Zaara.
The love between Simran(Kajol) and Raj(SRK) was great indeed, so great that they didn’t care what their parents thought at least Simran didn’t. Watching Veer-Zaara I cried from beginning to end, watching DDLJ, I cried only at the end when Raj was getting beaten up. Great love story.
Kal Ho Naa Ho
Now this was a sad movie indeed. The love Aman(Shahrukh Khan) cherished for Naina(Preity Zinta) was so great, he couldn’t allow her to fall in love with him and then lose him so soon. But they definitely loved each other. Hmm let’s see, Aman loves Naina, Naina hates Aman but later loves him, Rohit(Saif Ali Khan) likes Naina, but later loves her. To make a long story short, Rohit marries Naina with Aman’s help, Aman dies leaving behind the love of his life with someone else. Does SRK just love playing dead or what!
Devdas
Devdas(Shahrukh Khan) is a love tragedy; the unlucky man who was fated to fall in love with Parvati (Aishwarya Rai)(again childhood sweethearts) and later with Chandramukthi(Madhuri Dixit). He was heart-broken when Parvati gets married to someone else, nevertheless their love is still strong as ever. He leaves home for London, and becomes an alcoholic and falls in love with Chandramukthi, a pr*stitute. However, he still cannot forget Parvati and he also leaves London and goes back to see parvati before he dies. Tragic, just simply tragic. But I must say, Madhuri’s performance has simply outshined Aishwarya’s .
Hum Tum
This is the first time I’ve cried watching a Saif Ali Khan movie. Ok I wasn’t crying but I was close. So it took them nine years to figure out they loved each other. All because an idotic Karan(Saif) won’t admit how he feels. Why in every movie does Saif have to fight with the girl and then make up with her later? Let’s check, KHNH, Hum Tum, Parineeta, Salaam Namaste. He should get a new tack.
*Kyon Ki
Most of you may be wondering what the hell is this movie doing here, but I think it is a sweet love story, the fatal love of Tanvi(Kareena Kapoor)** and Anand(Salman Khan). At first Tanvi simply detests Anand, but after learning of Anand’s past and the reason for his insanity, her mind changes and she is totally in love. Anand, cured of his madness, and the death of his fiancée, feels the same for Tanvi. But Tanvi’s father is against the relationship. He hatches a plot to kill Anand, and Tanvi learning that Anand is dead, is now insane. Sweet story, sad ending.
Barsaat
I don’t know what people thought of Barsaat in general but I think it is a sweet love story. Arav(Bobby Deol) and Kajal(Priyanka Chopra) have been sweethearts growing up and they knew they loved each other; at least Kajal knew she loved Arav. Arav isn’t sure but he still marries her because of the wish of Kajal’s grandmother. He goes away for ten years to study leaving a heart-broken Kajal behind. Having completed his studies he starts his career and when he gets a great job he meets Anna(Bipasha). He thinks he’s in love with Anna; Anna loves him, he loves her. Back in India, he forces Kajal to sign a divorce document. But on the day of his wedding to Anna he realizes he’d forgotten to sign the document, but when confronted to sign it he cannot; remembering all the times he’d spent with Kajal. Kajal’s love for her husband is what took her through the lonely years and it is what brings Arav back to her. Cute and sweet
*Chalte Chalte
*This movie explores marital life rather than you usual three hour movie where a boy tries to win the girl’s heart. Movie is sweet and a bit sad too but nevertheless a cute love story.
