Before you read any further let me clarify that the ten authors that I have mentioned below are my current bunch of favourates (barring a few which I loved from my school days) and the list will definitely add to itself and many may lose their spot in the top 10 because lets face it, we or rather I am ignorant of the authors that are not recommended to me or I feel no interest for by reading the brief descript at the back of the cover. So without much further ado lets get on with the list.
FYI the list though mentioned from 1 to 10 isnt in any way depicting my choice of one author over the other with exception to the first 3 names I have mentioned which in itself I cant say who is no 1!!
1.) MICHEAL CRICHTON - I remember buying the novel - The Jurassic Park while I was in the 9th std and being blown away by his writing and the indepth analysis of the plot. Though I simply brought the book for fun, I enjoyed reading it more than watching the movie. Thus I began to buy and read every one of his books and they havent disappointed me at all. His themes are always varied and the thriller aspect is always present. Try reading sphere, airframe, time line etc if you are yet to catch his works. His passing away last year was indeed a sad moment made further so in knowing a great literary talent dies with him.
2.) MINETTE WALTERS - An author I came across by accident but glad that I did. Her novels are mostly dark and gruesome but boy can she write!! She manages to take such simple subjects and weave magic around them. Her writing style is brilliant and her plots captivating. Being a britisher, she has tinge of english flavour to her books but I wouldnt think it would bother you much. Try her the echo, the ice house, the scold's bridle , the breaker etc... I just cannot single out her novels... each is unique and worth the time spent, so I suggest u read her entire range which are all international bestsellers by the way but start with what I have mentioned above to acquire taste. She is a strong contender for the no.1 spot in my book.
3.) JOHN GRISHAM - a legal novelist with out compare. I started to love courtroom dramas from this man's books. His writing style and elaborate plots with intelligent characters and crosses makes his books irresistable. He is one of the most successful author of his genre with almost all his books becoming an international best seller. Try the firm, The rainmaker. A time to kill , The last juror and The appeal to know what I am talking about. You read his work once and you get hooked for life.
4.) JAMES PATTERSON - on of the best thriller novels author there is. He is the second highest rossing/best paid author in the world at the moment. His writing is sharp and his famous short chapters that give ultimate twists make way for a very interesting read. One of the more popular characters that he has introduced is detective Alex Cross and the Womans Murder Club. His novels are always fast paced and pretty much like watching a thriller movie and thats the reason he is enjoying the popularity he has today and should I mention one of the few authors to get 8 or more top sellers list consecutively!! try his Kiss The Girls, 1st To Die, Roses are Red etc etc to know what I am talking about.
5.) STEVE MARTINI - A lawer with a penchant for legal novels. He is equally if not more talented than the great John Grisham himself and most of his books are endorsed by Grisham himself. His writing is crisp and always to the point. No beating around the bush with this man. His books too consistently feature on the international topseller list. Try Compelling Evidence, The Arraignment, the judge and Undue influence to knwo what this man is capable of.
6.) R.A SALVATORE - The man who brought in fantasy novels into my life. Forced upon me by a friend, his books on the Forgotten Realms catagory changed ny perception of fantasy novels and opened a floodgate of sorts!! One of his most successful and popular characters - Drizzt DoUrden have enthralled fantasy genre readers for ages now. Its incredibly hard to find his books as they are mostly out of stock. aother disadvantage is that you have to follow the book in order, if u miss the first one you will have no clue whats happening in the third and some plots go as for as 10 books!! But if you ever find the book in Dark Elf Trilogy I can guarantee you that it is money and time well spent. Never have I read action written so fluidly that I can picturise them perfectly. Amazing amazing author.
7.) AGATHA CHRISTIE - my school days favourate, I have read and collected everyone of her books featuring Hercule Poirot and a few others too I must add. She is truely a master of her genre whose work is outsold only b y the bible!! If that doesnt sum up an author I dont know what does!! Only few can claim to bring the element of gripping suspense and plots as Christe does. She was always a favourate and will always remain to be. Try her books such as Death on The Nile, Mysterious affair at the Styles etc etc. One really cannot pick an Agatha christie book over an other. I started with death in the nile and there was no turning back. If any of you are yet to read her work, which I doubt, I sincerely suggest you catch up. You owe it to yourselves people
8.) P.G WODEHOUSE - no top 10 list would ever be complete with out wodehouse featuring in it. The man's a literary comic genius. I only started reading his works since last year and I was kicking myself for not getting there sooner.... but hey.. better late than never eh?? If you havent tries his books, I suggest you tru the Jeeves and Wooster series and the Psmith series.
9.) EOIN COLFER - I happened to read one of his books in 10th std and never looked back since. An Irish author who has garnered worldwide acclain for his witty and dark plots featuring the infamous Artemis Fowl. My only grouse is that his books are in the ' teens and young adults' section, so it makes me feelk wierd when I have to pick any of his latest books nowadays. Try the Artemis series and I assure you that you wont regret it.
10.) DOUGLAD ADAMS - many of you may be surprised at this choice but I have to say any man who thought of and wrote the extremely entertaining The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy needs to be on the list. Try the first book of the series and everything else is self explanatory.
Alright so I do know I have missed obvious choices but it must be my present mood or my blatant ignorance that none of the other authors are coming to mind reight now. Legends like sidney sheldon, jeffery archer are always popular choices but they are like some one saying they love tea or coffee when asked whats your favourate beverage... coz everyone loves it. Hope I have not brought on a headache with my ramblings. Happy reading and God bless.
