I have been using Tata Sky for over 2 years and this review is purely based on that, I can't compare it to other DTH services because I haven't used any other. I don't know if its the best or the worst!!
The obvious advantage of using Tata Sky is immediately evident, the picture quality is amazing compared to a normal cable connection and if you are a sports fan then you will have a pleasant experience. In fact after two years I am so addicted to the picture quality that my eyes start hurting when I see TV @ my neighbors or relatives. If you have a posh(LCD,LED, etc etc) TV to go with the connection then there is nothing like it and we have had no problems with the 2 set up boxes in our house.
Now, choosing a package can be extremely tricky, you would think no one in the house would watch sports channels and not choose it, Bam India vs Australia Series starts, now you are forced to pay extra each month for that channel, after a year of all this we decided we will go for the annual mega package, which has almost all the channels and services and we get to watch 12 movies, but this comes at a heavy price!! Now that they have introduced true choice packages, I still think its not as convenient as it sounds.
Interface is pretty user friendly I would say, it would take some practice to get used to the remote and the functioning Rajeev_Vermacially if you are new to all this, I love the fact that you can get to know which show is airing on which channel and you can also get a brief description of that show, helps a lot and you get used to it quickly.
Never believe a Tata Sky ad, the active services they boast off are not so active, for example, the active English service, if you want to learn English through that first you need to learn Hindi, and what they teach is definitely not worth 30 Rs per month! The Active Games is a big let down, playing games with kind of interface and with a remote will leave you with a severe headache! And Active Cooking? All they have is 3 videos of recipes from already aired cookery shows everyday!
One advantage of Tata Sky is that it can be your weather man, if it stops working then it means its raining outside your house! :)
Another thing I don't like is you get only 20 channels to set as favourites, I am so used to having my favourite channels next to each other and there will be more than 20 channels that a family would watch regularly!
And certainly don't think that once you have got the connection, all the prices will remain the same for eternity! The prices vary a lot, recently the multi room charges were increased with no explanation!
And the customtakeouter Care people usually don't have any answers to our queries, and before it was a STD call, now I guess they have centers in a few cities. Another thing that is irritating is their intrusive marketing strategies, whether be it a female voice shouting to buy slumdog millionare when you press guide or the yellow envelope on the top of ur TV screen or a showcase event message pop up in the middle of a cricket match, they do it all!!
Overall, Tata Sky has to an extent enriched my TV viewing experience but at a price and now I am stuck with it for a another year! If you want to buy it please make sure you are ready to pay a little(a lot) extra!
Now, For the big question, Has it made my life Jinga Lala? Umm.. well NO!!
