Chennai TV viewers have been in the strangle hold clutches of the Cable Mafia and have been forced to the STB (Set Top Box) regime. Most of Chennaites rebelled and did not subscribe with the result is many of the good channels were not being viewed.
Now the DTH players have broken the shackles and given freedom to Chennaites (and others too I'm sure). After a lot of research/study/comparison, I went in for Tata Sky over Dish TV, in spite of the fact that at the time of purchase (last week of Sept 06) Dish offered many more channels than TataSky.
Price : I paid 3,999 for the Set Top Box (Digicomp) which included a 1,000 Rs recharge coupon which took care of the installation and 50/- free recharge time, with a grace period of 15 days before next recharge (Not really 'free' recharge time since the Rs.50 equals to 15 days view time @ Rs200 pm !)
Installation: Tata really proved their professionalism. After I registered over the phone and asked for installation, the Customer Care person was extremely knowledgeable, pleasant and helpful,. (In fact before I purchased TataSky also I called the Customer care who cleared all my doubts). I'd purchased this on a Thursday and was told that due to large number of bookings my installation would be slotted for Monday, but they would try for Sunday or an earlier day. I was a bit disappointed since I'd planned to enjoy TataSky on the weekend. But surprise ! on Saturday morning I got a call from them saying that they had a free slot and would come over in an hours time, and they did! The technicians were highly professional, and did appear to be well trained. Their work was clean and neat and they explained what they were doing. The technician gave a demo which was very clear and helpful and walked me through all the various features, including Channel surfing, add to favorites, Active Channels, Help, Pay Per View channel (they call it something else).
About the Quality - FANTASTIC. I have a 29" TV and the picture is definitely DVD quality. The sound - true stereo phonic and when I hooked it to my HomeTheatre - it is truly a theatrical experience, when I watch movies, NGS or Discovery Channel.
Content : Tho many channels are missing - The sales guy and the technician said that the Zee channels would be available in a couple of days and Lo - they were !. As for SUN Network Channels, they said that these would be available by Divali (and I hope they are). If SUN channels are not made available this will spell the doom of TataSky in Tamil Nadu, so I hope they are listening !
Subscription : TataSky has this offer of Rs200 pm for four months. I just hope the combination packages would be as reasonable priced so as to make it affordable. We are just waiting for SUN channels to come before we say bye bye to our local Cablewallah and ask him to stuff his cable up his Set Top Box !
ReCharge : Almost at the end of the 'free' trial period, I bought a Rs550 recharge coupon. Surprisingly I could not get thru the toll free number the whole of the 2nd Oct weekend! But I did get thru and successfully recharged on 3rd Oct.
