I have a vehicle insurance policy from TATA-AIG on a vehicle which was on lease with Genpact India. I quit Genpact in Mar 2011 and foreclosed the lease. I moved to Chennai in April 2011 and submitted the NOC copy and RC book to TATA-AIG agents when they came to collect insurance renewal checks. They gave me the renewal notice in my name after viewing the NOC copies and collecting the name transfer forms and promised that the insurance policy will be sent to my home address in my name. However this has not happened.
Last week, I raised a claim on the vehicle since it was involved in a hit & run case by a III party vehicle. TATA AIG refused to honor the claim stating some obscure motor vehicles law that the name in the RC book and the policy should be the same. When I showed them the renewal notice which was given in my name, they first alleged that it was a forged copy and then when I proved that it was the original, they put the blame on the agent and disowned any responsibility for the agent's action. For the record, I spoke to Mr.Manikandan in the customer service department at 044-66220222.
I have the following questions for TATA-AIG:
How can you deny my vehicle insurance claim when the RC book is in my name and the delay in name transfer was on your side?
If you had a question on the ownership, why did you collect insurance premiums from me for the last 3 years? You can't collect premiums from me and then deny me the claim. That's against the principle of natural justice.
How can you shamefully disown any responsibility for your agent's action when the agent is contracted by you? That's legally impossible.
My policy number is 0150945760-02. Anybody willing to call me can call me on the number stated in the records.
I would not recommend TATA-AIG to anybody, not even my enemies. They have the lowest levels of customer service with agents ranging from rude to rank abusive. They seem to have a policy of not allowing any claim on their policies. I have written to the insurance ombudsman and I hope somebody investigates the practices of these fraudulent insurance companies.
We generally expect a high standard of professional and business ethics from the TATA group of companies. I didn't expect this from TATA-AIG, especially when I am myself an employee of a TATA company!!
