I am writing a review after a pretty long time.. Was kinda busy... Anyways, lemme not waste more time...
Tashan (meaning style) was one of the keenly awaited movies of 2008.
The promotions were surprisingly low-key. And there were controversies
galore (like YRF swearing not to work with Akki again and the usual
multiplexes-distributors war) at the time of release...
Some information about Tashan:
Starring: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor
Directed by: Vijay Krishna Acharya
Music: Vishal-Shekhar
Produced by: Yash Raj Films
The entire film rests on a wafer-thin plot... Bhaiyyaji (Anil) is an underworld don who wants to learn to speak English
(Why??!!) So, his aide Pooja (Kareena) appoints Jimmy (Saif) as his
tutor.. Jimmy falls for Pooja and Pooja too seems to reciprocate...But Pooja has other plans... She uses Jimmy to swindle
Bhaiyyaji of Rs. 25 crores and disappears..
So, Bhaiyyaji appoints Bachchan Pandey (Akki), a village rogue, to
find out the whereabouts of Pooja.... The entire film delves on this...
What happens when Jimmy and Bachchan find Pooja?? Does Bhaiyyaji get
his wealth back?
In between, Bachchan and Pooja are shown as childhood lovers...!! Also, Bhaiyyaji falls for Pooja and wants him to be his bride!! But Bachchan decides that he would only give the money and not Pooja to Bhaiyyaji. But there is a twist in the tale...!!
The negatives:
- Flaws galore... -Eg: Pooja
wants to immerse her father's ashes at Haridwar. But just a few minutes
before she does that, she is in Greece donning a two-piece bikini!!
Bachchan and Jimmy finding Pooja quite effortlessly in Haridwar or rather the other way round..
Bhaiyyaji
tracking down the trio without any efforts at all!! He comes and goes
at will... Then why to waste money on Bachchan??!!
- *The
music**: Only 1-2 songs are good. Dil Haara and Falak Tak stand out. The
rest including the bizarre "Dil Dance Maare" are well, bizarre!! Vishal-Shekhar have disappointed this time.
- *The
action sequences**: Akki is the best action hero in the country. But
sadly, the action sequences given to him would have been justified if
there was a South INDIAN hero.
4.Bhaiyyaji!!- Well, to begin with,
Anil bhai's role does seem amusing when he mixes up Hindi with English
and comes up with weird statements. But after sometime, the dialogues
get highly irritating and actually some of his dialogues are
incomprehensible!!
- Jimmy- A talented actor of Saif's calibre has been wasted as a side-kick...
And finally, the script (if there is one)!! Highly illogical..!!
The positives:
The cinematography.-The scenic locales of Greece and the serene Haridwar are beautifully captured..
Kareena Kapoor- Acted well, emoted well... And good news for guys. As already mentioned, she has donned a 2-piece bikini!! But the bad news is that she has lost so much weight that its actually not suiting her!!
3.
Last but not the least, the film belongs to Akshay Kumar.. One helluva
performance as a village rogue. Right from his entry till the end, if
the film does not falter totally, its due to Akshay Kumar. His accent,
his emotions, his comic timing and his action sequences (some were OTT
though) are all perfect.. Take Akki out and the film is a disaster of
epic proportions. Well done, Akki..
Tashan as a movie is disappointing as were YRF's earlier films like JBJ, LCMD.. Time for YRF to introspect...
Ratings:
Akki: 5/5 (No doubts!!)
Kareena: 3.5/5
Anil: 2.5/5
Saif: 2.5/5
Tashan is recommended for people who liked mindless action like Dhoom and Dhoom 2.. Also, this movie is bearable only because of the awesome on-screen presence of Akshay Kumar. Another feather in his cap but he would do better to choose better scripts.
Ratings and comments are eagerly awaited.
