Brilliant movie.
Sensitive portrayal of a family's tryst with a special child.
The child's altercation with other kids and his silent agony on his building's terrace .. and then forgetting it all in an instant upon discovering a kite is so simple but endearing.
True to life portrayal and the flowchart of events in a child's thought process when the child is made to sit out of his classroom..Has the director mirrored his own child hood experiences in a Convent school ?
The sequence of adventures enjoyed by the child in his jaunts on the streets of Mumbai,
having an ice-gola,
travelling on the top deck of a double decker BEST Bus,
leaning spread eagled out of the Bus in true 'Titanic' fashion,
dodging the arrogant traffic on the mean streets,
seeing a man climb up the scaffolding of a building being painted,
falling asleep in the school bus,
getting his big brother to forge an absent leave note due to sickness in the school calendar
are reminiscent of any school kids fond memories.
The gentle handling of a delicate situation,
confrontation with the parents,
with the boarding school principal,
sarcastic reactions of fellow teachers
has been portrayed with a matter of fact attitude without malice.
The trepidation in the eyes of the parents when they have to face the school principal and teachers who paint the child's personality as a mentally challenged / retarded kid have been presented in two contrasting colours .. one from the perspective of the patient tolerant mother, and the other of the much demanding fed-up father.
A film well worth the time spent to make - as spent in the theatre.
But in all this, what about Aamir Khan's own children. A sensitive director - but an insensitive father ?
He has managed to keep the spotlight away from his own children and kept a stoic silence on his seperation from his first family.
It may be his own personal life - but one does wonder.
Personally I am not an avid film critic but I enjoy movies and appreciate the hard work put in for this one.
Good show Aamir, you have been a perfectionist - keep it up.
