Until 3 months ago, my wife and I were using a different toothpaste, when we came across the advertisement in the TV for Babool toothpaste .. “Subah Babool kii to din tumhara” and we wanted to give it a try. There was a promotional offer going also Rs 55 for 2 x 200 g tubes. Usual price is Rs 32 for a200gm pack. We have been using this to our great satisfaction till now and will continue wherever we move if this is available in that place. We are now in Oman [a gulf country] and as a pleasant surprise this is available in supermarkets here also.
Babool Toothpaste is manufactured by Vaspan Enterprises at Silvassa and marketed by Balsara Home products Ltd.
The key ingredients are Calcium Carbonate, Sorbitol, Peppermint Flavour and Babul extract and does not contain flouride.
Calcium Carbonate [CaCO3 ], a chalk powder, which acts like a smooth and soft tooth polish. If accidentally swallowed by children or adults is not harmful as it acts like an antacid which relieves heartburn, acid indigestion, and stomach upset. Calcium is also needed by the body for healthy bones, muscles, nervous system, and heart.
Sorbitol, a polyol (sugar alcohol), is a natural sweetener derived from corn oil. In addition to providing sweetness, it is an excellent moisturising and texturising agent. Sorbitol is about 60 percent as sweet as sucrose with one-third fewer calories. It has a smooth mouthfeel with a sweet, cool and pleasant taste. Sorbitol has been safely used in processed foods for almost fifty years. It is also used in other products, such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Natural Peppermint Flavour from pure Peppermint Oil, lends a pleasant taste that encourages tooth brushing, even among children.
Babool Toothpaste is a natural toothpaste containing the ayurvedic and medicinal benefits of the Babul tree, 'Acacia Arabica'. The Babul herbal extract in Super Babool Toothpaste helps prevent swelling & bleeding of gums, keeping gums healthy and teeth strong.
Babul, also known as the 'Gum Arabic Tree,' is astringent, demulcent, nutritive, expectorant, and also an aphrodisiac. Other medicinal values of Babul are for the treatment of colds, diarrhea, hemorrhage, and ophthalmia, leprosy. The bark decoction curtails nausea. A liniment, made by steeping the bark, is used for bathing and massage in pneumonia. Gum Arabic's main effect is to form a protective, soothing coating over inflammations in the respiratory, alimentary, and urinary tracts. The root powder is used in leucorrhoea. The juice of tender leaves is used as a lotion in conjunctivitis , while a leaf paste in cold water is used as an anti-dysenteric agent. The bark decoction is also used as a gargle and mouthwash in throat and laryngeal inflammation and aphthous stomatitis , as also to clear ulcers and wounds
Why one should use herbal toothpaste?
Most commercial brands of toothpaste use chemicals and additives that may be toxic in large doses. Some ingredients are a cause for concern such as Flouride, saccharin, Sodium lauryl sulphate [SLS].
Fluoride : These are derived from hydrofluoric acid. One of the most common ways fluoride is made is by filtering airborne industrial waste given off by fertilizer producers. In large doses fluoride is known to cause learning disabilities and tooth problems!
Saccharin : An artificial sweetener used in toothpaste, mouthwash and lipstick. Saccharin fell out of favor in the 1980’s when lab rats developed bladder cancer after being given this substance in high doses.
Sodium lauryl sulphate [SLS] : is used a detergent and helps make the toothpaste foam. It is a known skin irritant and some people are very allergic to this chemical.
Coming back to babool toothpaste the foam generated by it is adequate [neither more nor less] for brushing of teeth. Truly our experience says that one remains refreshed through out the day after brushing teeth with Babool toothpaste and justifies its slogan “Subah Babool kii to din tumhara” or “Begin a great day, the babool way”.
Lastly A useful Tip:
Apples have a mouth cleansing property which no other fruit possesses. Taken after meals, they have the same effect as a tooth brush in cleansing the teeth. Besides the acid content in addition to its nutritive value, assists in promoting the flow of saliva in the mouth, which is also beneficial to the teeth.
