B'lore is in grip of a major Floyd fever and I was smitten by it as soon as I stepped into this city.So ,as an antidote we planned for Purple Haze 'n as I was climbing up the stairs I remembered a comment on one of my revus on Bangalore from one of the metalhead on this site ,Mr Calvin regarding a place called ''STYX''.(Thanx ,Calvin)So I thot of giving it another try !!!
I always identified the place where STYX is now located with some shady live band joints that were located there in the past. But somehow the whole place seems to have now got a facelift .Posters of Jim Morrison, Pantera,Bob marley etc greeted me as I climbed up the stairs 'n gives a fair idea as to what is expected from this place. As I pushed past the heavy doors , I was welcomed by the kewl psycheddelic guitar riffs of Gilmour. As I had just loafed past the blinding colourful Brigades 'n entered here,it took me some time to accustomise to the dark lightings 'n interiors inside. One thing that caught my eye was the aquarium transfixed on the wall, hope some dope headed dude doesnt bang his head into it one day. Next comes the seatings , I was immediately attracted to those next to the windows overlooking MG Road. Unfortunately , u r never so lucky to catch a seat in B'lore pubs , especially if u r walking in a bit late( 'n that too it was midddle of the week, over wekeends I suppose u can better forget it)Eventho' the pub looked somewhat asymmetrical ,its pretty decent for B'lore standards.
One thing that I always luv of these rock pubs in Blore r the wide screen videos of the songs as its played 'n I believe they 've a good collection of DVD's out here ,as I watched some smashing videos . Yup,its out 'n out rock 'n metal that rulez here 'n crowd here surely seems to know their music 'n were having a blast, with songs belted out perfectly complementing their hi-spirits.I even heard that one Ms Yasmin is a guest DJ once in a week here 'n is the first local female DJ of the town .Anybody here can confirm that? Anyway , 3 cheers for Yasmin ,for breaking the frontiers. With Floyd in background , I dont believe anything blends well ,apart from a bottle of chilled out beer 'n frankly I ddint check out the menu to write anything special abt the beverages here.
One interesting observation is, in the limted places I 've travelled so far,I 've never come across a true pub or whatever u call it, with pure unadulterated vintage classic rock being played as in Pecos (I just wish they can step up their ambience a wee-bit )or Purple Haze, maybe I have missed out I dont know .You r always at crossroads with a mix of Britney Spears ,some retro classics, low calorie rock 'n bubblegum pop all hashed up together ,surprsing but true.Infact rock pubs r a rarity 'n its always techno/electronic/trance/rap/blues that rules .
Anyway coming back to topic, invariably there will be comaprisons to Purple Haze ,but I must say its too early as of now to compare this with anything, but is a good alternative option for all rock fans if u r a bit that too much bored with HAze.Options r always welcome 'n good ,isnt it ? Anyway this place seems to be at its innovative best with theme parties like yesterady's rocking ''Pink Floyd ,welcome to Rogers Waters'' night 'n today its a tribute to Megadeth 'n heard in past month had some exclusive ones dedicated to Metallica, ACDC etc(Keep checkign out my revus for the update).Hope the innovative streak continues !!!
