If you are a fan of the 70's cop show Starksy and Hutchyou will love this film.
If you are a fan of Ben Stiller and/or Owen Wilson you will like this film.
If you are neither of the above but like good comedy you will still like this film. Else you probably won't. But if you do not see it you will be missing out on a real fun time.
Following on from other remakes of 70s tv series comes Starsky and Hutch starring Ben Stiller (Dave Starsky) and Owen Wilson (Ken Hutchinson) who are two policeman who are made partners after both their previous assignments go disastrously wrong.
Paired together they take on the case against Evil Drugs Baron (Vince Vaughn) helped by their reliable informer Huggy Bear (Snoop Doggy). This film is faithful to the original right down to the Starsky's cardigan, Hutch's leather jacket, and the red ford cortina complete with white stripe.
It is also faithful to the period it was set in. Yes it is set in the 70s and so it comes complete with the bad hair, bad clothes, big sideburns and a very cool soundtrack. The film is very funny and all the actors have played their parts really well. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson make a good comedy duo and they have a real chemistry between them.
There is romantic interests played by carmen electra and some other woman but they really only have bit parts. There are also Cameos from other comics who the pair have worked with over time aswell as other personalities of stage and screen including the original Starsky and Hutch (David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser).
The film works well as a comedy even if you haven't seen the original tv show. The one liners are good and the set pieces are funny. Vince vaughn as the drugs baron and snoop dog as Huggy bear are really good.
As a remake of the orignal it works better than Charlies Angels did as it does not even try to update the originals and captures the atmosphere and the times which made Starsky and Hutch one of the longest running cop shows that it was. Updating it would have lost all the elements that made Starsly and Hutch the show it was with the actions, the sleazy villains, the women etc.
The scenes where Starsky inadvertently has cocaine and has a dance off with Har Mar Superstar (looking suspiciously like Ron Jeremy) is hilarious. As is the scene with Starksy and Hutch are in disguise and Starsky is intent on everyone just Doin' It
I really enjoyed it. I would recommend it to watch as a date movie or with a bunch of friends. There is enough to appeal to both blokes and women. It does make good family viewing but the humour is adult and so if you do not like watching that kind of stuff with family then you probably shouldn't. Although saying that most of it would go over your grandmothers head so no need to worry there.
I really enjoyed it and was surprised that it was not on mouthshut but then maybe it has not yet been released in India yet. However go and get the DVD or VCD or whatever asw that should be available as it is worth a watch. In the words of Starksy you should be out there Doin' It on this one.
