St. Xavier's college, Kolkata
Of course I am not talking of the movie morning raga. I am talking of the raga which everyday falls to our ears in the very morning telling us wake up boy, wake up. You are not destined to have a sound sleep. The small figure above symbolizes that raga, that alarm, that bellrings, that VP's music and much more?
Coming back after a long time, I pounced upon a topic on which I intended to write from a long time back. My life has changed drastically from the day I put my foot on the ever-shining floor of this college. Being a commerce student here, I would love to share my experiences of this india's 2nd ranked (in commerce) institution.
Situated at 30, Park Street the name St. Xavier's College itself reflects powerfulness. We feel proud of ourselves passing through its corridors, experiencing each and every peace of beauty of this great heritage institution. Whether its early morning 6 a.m or 9.30, the ambience speaks for itself everytime, though in between that we do have some hard times. Hard times, here, associates with attending some boring lectures and also facing music in vice-principal's office. Facing music, here, mainly is associated with our less attendance which is again associated with that damn timing 6.00-9.40 a.m.
Attendance, you know, is one of the most famous words in the dictionary of our college. The funda behind that is you ATTEND, otherwise DANCE. Dance on the tunes of V.P's music. There is one thing which I like very much and which kept me going to college, although not so regularly i.e the time when we step out of the home in the morning. we get to see a different kolkata- traffic-free, pollutionless, a cool one. Particularly in winter, the weather becomes so serene that one tends to fall in love with its surroundings. That journey of 20-25 min. from home to college is the best part of the day.
One of the main strengths of our college, I believe, is our teachers. They are always there in the time of need. They are always there to put an extra effort on their students. Some of the teachers even organize special classes to enhance other skills and abilities. Some of the notable teachers of the college are Prof. Sampat Mukherjee (economics), Prof. Sumona Ghosh (Law, my best teacher), Prof. J.Chakraborty (Maths), Prof. S.L.Chakraborty (Economics and IFS), Prof. P.Goswami (Management and B.Comm.) etc. Among them Prof. S.L.C is the most dangerous teacher of the college. Nobody dare to talk in his class. But he is having his own unique sense of humour also. We really enjoy his classes very much. some of the teachers' devotion to teaching is just unimaginable.
A special library is there known as the goethals Indian library and research center. Situated adjacent to the college building, just above the main chapel, it is a piece of history in itself. It contains around 18663 volumes of books ranging from Indian history to biographies, religion to law & medicine etc. some of the books there are rarely found and so old that a hard touch would turn its pages into powders.
Then there is reading-cum-cyber room where serenity reigns, silence speaks for itself. Alike other colleges, SXC have its own canteen popularly known as Arunda?s canteen. But its food are really intimidating. It is simply horrible. College has lately opened its entrepreneurship development cell. It's for the budding entrepreneurs. Anybody who seeks to open his own organization, having a bit of creativity and innovative mind can knock the cell's door. A placement cell is also there. Many students every year are placed in different reputed companies with a good package.
And there is NSS (National school service) and NCC also. NSS organizes camp twice or thrice every year in villages. It also organizes blood donation camp in the college itself. Students very heartily donate a part of their blood bringing light in the life of needy ones. Its always on the move whether it is for making park street greener or any other social cause.
St. Xavier's College is currently craving for the autonomy. Once the college gets it, it will be on top of the list. It will be much ahead in the race.
Lastly I would just like to say I AM REALLY REALLY PROUD TO BE A XAVERIAN!!!
