It was 1998; I passed my 1st board exam with flying color. I liked to take admission to the city's best school and I had the required marks with me. After a long discussion with others I shortlisted two schools(or college) one Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission and other St. Xavier's College. When it was almost decided that R.K Mission would be my 1st choice then suddenly I opted for the St. Xavier's College as it was(is) more glamorous college in Kolkata. So one fine day I took admission to St. Xavier's College. My schooling was from a simple school with medium standard. Xavier's have larger campus, huge building with heritage design, I felt nervous.
Our class started. From the very 1st day I realized that I all the persons, fellow students here were the best students from all over West Bengal and here I was just an ordinary student. Everybody had dream to touch the sky where my dream was to be a simple engineer. I became more and more nervous as days went on.
The some experiences which I felt first time(or may be the last time)
A college can be so neat and clean. Not a single mark on the wall, not a single paper on the floor.
Professors wait out side the class just before classes start
Attendance in a college is must. One absent mean collect the excuse slip from the dean showing guardian letter otherwise professor would not allow in the class.
Prior Notice from the professor if he/she can't attend one class.
Pin drop silence in the reading room
No political student union
Very humble principal(When I saw him first time I thought he was the clerk)
Number of facilities like huge laboratory, huge Library and so much of low cost
Today almost after 10 years I just think how the college can maintain so high standard in the field of discipline.
Anyway within 2 months after admission I was sure that I took a wrong decision by taking admission to this college. Because the standard was very high, strict discipline, I hardly got any time to study myself. Everybody had so high dream that gradually I also started to feel big. One day our first exam came in Xavier's came. Till that exam I(we) have only experienced how to feel when you score high rank but here first time I(we) experienced how it feel to pass the exam, and believe me it is far more better than rank high. We did very miserable score and understood that only dreaming big was not adequate. Preparing for that is also important and also short term goal needs to be set first. I got some of my best friends at those time. We struggled hard to meet all the ends 10+2 exam, IIT-JEE, JEE etc. At this stage of my life I learnt Statistics which is still my favorite subject(I never got the opportunity to learn Statistics after that). One day came when it was only the exam time. Only Exams one by one, all were important, our career’s turning points. Some of my friends cleared to Medical Entrance, Some to the Engineering field and Some to prepare themselves for some more effort to make it big.
With only two year's tenure St. Xavier's, has left a big impression to my mind that still now I feel that yes that was one of my greatest time and seriously I has a longer lasting memory than my 1st school(here my attachment was 10 years) and Engineering college(attachment was 4 years).
One con that I can remember about this college is the location. It is in Part Street and except this college the area is more popular for its bar cum restaurants. Some of my friends could not control themselves to shift gradually more towards those. Now a day we don't know where they are. Anyway yes it the best college in Kolkata. Experience it if you can.
