Akshay Kumar, had proved his versatility since long in Bollywood with roles as that of a typical justice giving action hero, a tough cop, soldier, lover boy, comedy and even a couple of negative roles. However, in Anees Bazmee's Singh is King(2008)Akshay Kumar had proved his mettle for the first time as a Sardar.

Plot:-

Lakhan Singh(Sonu Sood) is the king of Australia's underworld, earning him the title of King as he is popularly known. His accomplices include Julie(Neha Dhupia), Raftaar(Sudhanshu Pandey), Mika(Jaaved Jaffery), Pankaj Udhas(Yashpal Sharma), Dilbaug Singh(Manoj Pahwa) and Gurbaksh Singh(Kamal Chopra) also known as'Guruji'.In the opening scenes, at a high profile party thrown by the King, an Australian rival tries to kill him and others at the party, but manages to escape despite the swift reaction of his accomplices.Seeing him escape swiftly, Lakhan manages to nab him and kill him, proving that the King himself can be a deadly match.

The scenes then shift towards Punjab where Happy Singh(Akshay Kumar) lives in a village which is the birthplace of Lakhan Singh, also known as'lucky'. Happy through his hassles has upset the villagers and the villagers decide to send him along with Rangeela(Om Puri) to Australia to bring back Lucky. But another hassle occurs at the airport where Rangeela collides with Puneet(Ranvir Shorey) and their tickets get interchanged, and the duo, Happy and Rangeela, land up in Egypt. This is a turning point in Happy's life where he gets to meet his future lady love Sonia(Katrina Kaif) who is a student of criminology. However, Happy being penniless has nowhere to stay and he gets warmth and affection by a poor flower selling lady Kirron Kher.

Later, Happy realises that Sonia is the daughter of Kirron Kher, but she is unaware that her mother is living in Egypt, selling flowers for a living.Later, Happy, Rangeela and Kirron, land up in Australia and try to convince Lucky to get back to his village but he refuses.Later, after a series of violent events, Lucky ends up paralyzed and then Happy gets the title of King taking charge of all of Lucky's possessions and accomplices. On knowing that Sonia would be coming along with her fiance to Australia to meet her mother, she pretends to be the owner of the bungalow which belongs to Lucky. On their arrival, it is then known that Puneet is the fiancé of Sonia and the duo would be getting married very soon.

Puneet being an arrogant and no-nonsense guy gets into fights and arguments with Happy and Lucky's accomplices. This irks the King's accomplices and they decide to kill him but Happy rescues him.

The story moves on with small twists and turns and events which would ultimately decide the outcome of Sonia and Happy's relationship.Whether Sonia would end up marrying Puneet or Happy?

Direction/Performances/Others:-

Anees Bazmee proved to be quite a name in Bollywood after directing comedies such as No Entry(2005) and Welcome(2007).He has done a magnificient job this time too with directing this multi starrer along with a good concept which combines drama, action, romance and comedy.

Looking at the performances, Akshay Kumar earns the title as he initially plays an fun loving but vulnerable villager, and then transforms himself into the character of a King minus the pride and arrogance. He displays his romantic side too with ease as he falls in love with Sonia but is later heartbroken on realising that she is soon to get married to Puneet. His mission then becomes to unite Sonia and Puneet as well as give the best to her mom, who provided him with shelter and refuge when he was helpless in Egypt.

Katrina Kaif too did well as Sonia. She tried to portray herself as an ambitious young woman who hates criminals by attempting to beat up a guy who steals her handbag while in Egypt. Her romantic angle with Happy also convinced the audiences on her acting prowess. This film was among those films which were helping her to boost her career thus garnering a name among the well known actresses of Bollywood.

Sonu Sood did quite well portraying himself as the'King'. This was one film besides Jodha Akbar(2008) and the later ones such as Dabangg(2010) and Shootout at Wadala(2013) which gave him  a strong and an easily recognizable character, which was well appreciated by the audiences.

Om Puri played a fun loving Sikh character after his short stint in Hera Pheri(2000),but here he had an emotional side too as Happy's friend in times of need.

Kirron Kher would remind you of a typical poor emotional mother in any of the earlier roles she has portrayed. As Sonia's mother and her relation with Happy, whom she considered as her own son, it managed to touch people's hearts.

Other characters too had their part which were recognizable such as Ranvir Shorey as Sonia's arrogant fiancé Puneet, Jaaved Jaafery as Mika, one of Lucky's accomplices, who later had an agenda of his own, Sudhanshu Pandey as Raftaar, one of the accomplices who had a troubled relationship and Yashpal Sharma as Pankaj Udhas, who often was sad in a comical manner, Manoj Pahwa as Dibaug Singh and senior actor Kamal Chopra as Guruji, who used to come in many advertisements of the 90's.

The film was largely shot in Australia with significant portions shot in Egypt and Punjab.

Music:-

The music of this movie mainly the title track Singh is Kinng and others such as Jee Karda and Teri Ore became popular weeks before the film's release. In addition, there were tracks such as Bhootni Ke, Talli Hua and I am Mika. Daler Mehndi, Snoop Dogg(Popular for his version of Bas Ek King), Shreya Ghoshal, Labh Janjua, Suzanne Dmello, Neeraj Shridhar and ,Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Jaaved Jaafery lent their voices for the film.

The lyrics were penned by Mayur Puri and the music was composed by Pritam.

Overall:-

Singh is Kinng has all the concepts of a Bollywood film which makes it a fun loving entertainer. It surely adds to my recommendation and it is not restricted to watching just with friends, but even with families on the whole.
