We stayed one night at this hotel at Kanya Kumari in Nov-08. The stay was quite comfortable.
The hotel is really large and gives the feel of being in a huge lovely place. There are a no. of plants and trees in the long driveway up the porch. There is a butterfly shaped swimming pool at the rear, by the restaurant, which has been done up really well now.
The construction work is now nearing close, so not much hassle as described in the previous review. The staff was generally amicable and treated us well.
We got a good room with a balcony opening towards the sea (Bay of Bengal). Rooms still have old style thick red drapery curtains which give a dark feel. Early mornings (5:45am) are kept for sunrise views from top terrace, which is arrived after crossing the under construction floors. Then you have to carefully cross an array of outdoor units of split ACs on the terrace to reach the sea side of the parapet.
All the ready cameras, eager to get the shot of sun coming out from water, could only shoot cloulds hovering over the horizon.
Keep standing for 30-45 minutes expecting the sunrise, only to realise clouds have spoiled the show and the sun jeeringly peeks out over your head. Its heard that sunrise is seen here in Jan-Mar period.
I came here for the "sheer feel of being there at the southernmost tip of Indian's mainland". Disappointed to find India's coastline at the confluence of the 3 oceans at Kanyakumari lined with cheap stuff shacks. There is little adminstration to control this menace and make the place a beauty.
The view from the top floor of Singar was much better, than having to fight the way to the rock and roam around the badly cluttered lane by the coastline.
