I have eaten at Sindhudurg so many times I cannot remember. I think this is one of those VFM (Value for Money) restaurants that surpasses many others in almost all areas of hospitality. Run by Dr. Subhash Awchat, this eatery, located in a bylane just before you reach Sena Bhawan after having passed Plaza cinema, is one where one can have a family repast for less than Rs. 500/-. Their chicken, fish and mutton thalis are still priced at or below Rs. 100/= ... and although they are "limited" in quantity, the quantity itself is so much that you won't need more!
They are well known for Malvani food, but also serve other types of food. Sea food thalis, esp. fish and prawn, are excellent. The a la carte menu comprises different combinations of rice, rotis and "wada" the puri like thick round fried item that one dips into fish or chicken and has by the dozen!
The ideal a la carte combination would be "kombdi-wade" ... a chicken curry with the wada's.The decor is decent, and maintenance free as it is mostly made of steel. Don't go there if you want a soft chair or sofa to sit, tables with table-cloth and cutlery, etc. The service is prompt and no-nonsense simple service with steaming hot food served to the table within ten minutes. They have a wash room that is cramped, and the hand washing basin on the upper level often does not have running water, so a bucket is kept there and liquid soap and a tumbler to do the washing. No table service for finger- bowls.
The food: the food is delectable, and if you are looking at no-nonsense, no-frills reasonable fare, this restaurant is for you. A last word. They also serve vegetarian food, but why go there for it? :-)
