The third installment of the scary movie franchise (if you can call it that) has the following tagline “You'll die to see these rings”.
The “story” revolves around Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) ,a reporter for a news agency who has to figure out the connection between a killer videotape, crop circles, aliens. When you watch this movie you will notice that this movie borrows heavily from movies such as The ring, 8 mile road, The signs, and the matrix. Frankly speaking what seems to be the case is that scary movie 3 lacks a definite storyline and it is as if the makers wanted to do a cut and copy patchwork. So have been the other earlier parts one and two, but they were atleast better. But dont get me wrong here ! This movie isn’t actually that bad.
It has been sometime since this movie has been released and I assume that revealing parts of the “story” wouldn’t spoil the “suprise”. Cindy (Anna faris) is a long lost friend of Brenda (Regina Hall), who plays a kindergarten teacher in which Cindy’s nephew Cody is enrolled. Cody(Drew Mikuska) seems to have a psychic sense in which he can foresee the future and he does that and how ! Cindy as a reporter had earlier covered the mysterious appearance of crop circles in Tom Logans farm, who is played by Charlie Sheen. His brother George is played by Simon Rex, has no interest in farming and wants to make it big in the hip hop arena.
He picks up his niece Sue(Jianna Ballard) at the same school when Cody is enrolled and meets Cindy and Brenda and invites them to view his performance at the 23 club when he will be performing. After his performance when Cindy goes back to Brenda’s home to give her company, Brenda reveals that she had watched a videotape, and after watching it the phone rang and she was told by a creepy voice that she was going to die in seven days, and that night was the seventh night. Her partial disbelief in this “urban legend” is illustrated in the way she plays a few tricks on Cindy. Cindy however falls for such tricks and then it is the case of the “boy who cried wolf”. She ignores Brenda’s screams when she is in real danger. At her home, Cindy finds the tape her friend had been talking about and this reignites her curiosity. As soon as she watches it she is threatened by the creepy voice that she would die in a week. That’s what happens to those who watch it.
She entrusts Cody to the care of George while she goes and meets Aunt
Shaneeqwa (Queen Latifah), who actually doesn’t tell her how the tape is connected to the crop circles and the aliens and insists that it is Cindy who should find it out for herself. When she goes back home she is shocked to see Cody watching the tape, and he is also threatened by the same creepy voice about the seven day expiry date he has left. She manages to somehow get the news about the killer video on the news and this comes to the notice of the President, played by Leslie Nielson. Cindy goes to the location of a particular lighthouse which she sees in the tape and lo and behold, she finds the architect, played by George Carlin, much like how Neo in the matrix trilogies finds the architect of the matrix. George Carlin says that they pushed their adopted daughter Tabitha down the old family well because she did some crazy things like hiding the remote, etc. At the bottom of the well she managed to get her hands on a camera and tape recording machine and she records these things on a videotape. This part I assumed.
The news agency warns people that they are in danger of aliens who are going to invade the earth, and they even schedule a killer video marathon, where they show the same killer video all night. Cindy tracks Cody to Toms house, when Mahalik (Anthony Anderson) decides to drop in. When the men of the house go outside to fight the aliens they are met by the President who wants to meet Cindy Campbell.( How did he know that she was there ?). CJ (Kevin Hart) also brings along his army of other rappers to combat the aliens. But this army is dissipated in a barrage of friendly fire just because of a misunderstanding of someone’s shoe being tread upon.
After a brief meeting with the aliens, they explain that they are not here to invade earth but to find the evil little girl in the killer video whose transmission had been picked up by their satellites( when did this happen) and that if they don’t kill the girl their entire race is in danger.
Cindy in the basement of the house however finds the well into which Tabitha had been pushed. Tabitha confronts her and in the battle that ensues, she is pushed back into the well which is sealed off by George. Well, that’s all folks, end of story !!
A bit haphazard, aint it? Don’t blame me that was the story of the movie.
Now take the storyline which I typed above, throw in a few irrelevant, absurd and vulgar comedy sequences and you have yourself a new version of a scary movie! If you can change the entire story, even better!!
The best or the worst part is that no one can define comedy exactly, and I believe David Zucker has taken full advantage of that. The comedy sequences don’t exactly find their place too well in this movie, but if that has been a winning combination for the scary movie team, good for them.
This movie has depended upon the proper placement of sequences adapted or altered from other movies and eventually turned them into comedy. Like I said before, this movie isn’t all that bad, but it is the vulgar language and comedy which will make you think twice about the company with whom you watch this movie.
The final verdict, you ask? Well frankly, the first time I watched this movie I laughed and the next time I laughed and so on and so forth. Some viewers may disagree. This movie manages to tread the fine line between being a good and a bad movie. Don’t expect a proper story out of this. I did not and if you are like me, then you will watch this movie.
