Thriller movies are rare in India. A housewife trying to break her husband out of jail is rarer! Savi is a tale of a determined wife who puts her family first and goes to extraordinary lengths to save her husband, who she believes is falsely convicted.
It's been long since we were treated to Bollywood thrillers like these. I loved watching Drishyam, and this was along similar lines. If you love a fast-paced movie with a unique theme, then Savi is for you. Family over everything. Coupled with some standout performances and a simple storyline, Savi, directed by Abhinay Deo, should definitely be on top of your watchlist.
Storyline of the Movie
The film is based in Liverpool, UK, where Savi(played by Divya Khosla) is a housewife whose world revolves around her family and her husband Nakul(played by Harshavardhan Rane). Nakul is falsely acquitted of a crime he did not commit and is sentenced to life imprisonment.
Savi is determined to prove her husband is innocent, even if it means breaking the law. She devises a bold escape plan with the help of Jaydeep Paul(played by Anil Kapoor) who is an ex-convict. Both of them come with unique tricks and disguises to attempt a daring jailbreak. As an audience, the gripping, thriller scenes felt real. The story goes on how Savi, a simple, homemaker breaks her husband out of a high-security prison in the UK.
Even though the idea may seem far-fetched, and it does look over the line at some points, the director keeps the storyline simple. There are standout performances like Paul an ex-convict with his witty charm, who helps Savi along the way and keeps the story interesting.
Divya Khosla manages her role as Savi quite well but could have been better during emotional scenes. The backgrounds of all the characters in the film did not seem thought out and lacked any depth which made it difficult to relate to them. However, this was compensated by superb cinematography and dialogues.
My Verdict
I feel the chemistry between Paul and Savi is what keeps this story alive. Although the plot seemed predictable to me, the witty exchanges and planning between the two kept me hooked until the end. Even if you don’t watch the movie closely, you might notice a lot of loopholes that could have been avoided.
The film has a decent soundtrack that goes well with the fast pace of the movie. Performance-wise I had mixed feelings about Divya’s performance which didn’t seem consistent throughout. Her overnight change from a homemaker to a brilliant jailbreaker could have used a smoother transition.
Anil Kapoor was thoroughly entertaining till the end and was a perfect cast by the director. Overall directing was much better than the storyline and the dialogue. It was a tough theme, but the filmmakers managed to portray a perfect combination of thrill and emotions. Savi is a must-watch for all thrill lovers who love an ambitious, yet decent storyline.
