We all know who Saurav Ganguly is, how good his overall record is, how poor his current form is and what all he achieved or did not achieve in his stint as captain.
Here I am trying to focus on a slightly different issue. Now everyone and his father has an opinion on whether Ganguly did the right thing by going to the media. I too have mine.
Friends, do remember that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Now in what context am I quoting this. Read on to find more.
Our friend, the super talented Greg Chappell is the one who started this media circus. Guys! Give me a break. Even before he began the entire media had made him into a super hero. For almost a month it was the Chappell chant every where and this even when he had still to begin working with the boys. And when he did start the actual camp, gosh even the first day was covered by the journos telling us how Chappell’s army was exercising. And then Chappell had an opinion on everything. “Sachin is way past his prime.” He goes and tells a newspaper and then says he was misquoted. My dear friends if he genuinely feels that Sachin Tendulkar is way past his prime then why go to the press. Why not talk to Sachin about it? Why report to the press that Ganguly, Kaif and Ashish Nehra came late for the first day of the training before the Zimbabwe tour. Why not take the boys to task himself?
By going to the media, I think Ganguly has given Greg a dose of his own medicine. So why is he crying now? He got what he usually gives others. Greg Chappell is the one who has started the media circus. John Wright spent almost 5 years with the Indian cricket team and with Ganguly took it to a fairly potent level. But how many of us have ever seen him seeking media branding. He and Ganguly have openly admitted to having differences but they never quarreled like this. They always held each other in high esteem.
I think what Greg has forgotten or probably he doesn’t know is that Ganguly is a man who took off his shirt in reply to a similar topless act by Flintoff. You go to the media, I’ll bloody blow up an entire issue in your nose. That seems to be his motto. For that’s the man’s style.
